The Atlantic Vision sailed from Naantali on November 29. The vessel was officially renamed on December 11 at St John’s Harbour Front.
Superfast IX left for Canada
After an almost three months long
refit at Turku Repair Yard at Naantali,
Finland, the ro-pax ferry Superfast IX,
now renamed Atlantic Vision, started
its voyage to Canada on November 29,
2008.
The Canadian company Marine Atlantic
Inc has taken the ferry on a long term
bareboat charter from AS Tallink Grupp in
Estonia. Before entering service in December,
the Atlantic Vision was rebuilt for her
new route at Turku Repair Yard, including
installation of new and more powerful bow
thrusters and rebuilding the stern. The vessel
used to have two stern doors, now there
is only one to fit the existing ro-ro ramps
in the ports.
Marine Atlantic is a government owned
corporation, providing constitutionally
mandated ferry services on two routes
between the Island of Newfoundland and
the Province of Nova Scotia. The 96 nau-
tical mile ferry service between Port aux
Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador
and North Sydney, Nova Scotia has daily
sailings year round, while the 280 nautical
mile tri-weekly service between Argentia,
Newfoundland and Labrador and North
Sydney, Nova Scotia is operated during the
summer season only.
Delivered in November
The Atlantic Vision is owned by Baltic
SF IX Limited, a subsidiary of AS Tallink
Grupp. The vessel was delivered to Marine
Atlantic at Naantali on November 14,
2008. According to Tallink, the charter
is a part of restructuring the ferry service
between Finland and Germany. Since
September 2008 Tallink has operated two
Superfast-vessels on the route, The Superfast
VII and the Superfast VIII. It is stated
that the charter helps to increase the profitability
of the route and the three Superfast
vessels.
The Superfast IX was built by HDW in
Kiel, Germany and delivered to the Greek
owner Superfast Ferries in January 2002,
inaugurating their new Södertälje–Rostock
service on January 11.
Transferred to Scotland
After just three months of operations the
service was closed down on April 21, 2002
and the Superfast IX was transferred to
another route between Rosyth, Scotland
and Zeebrügge, Belgium. Since November
2005 the vessel has been sailing between
Finland and Germany. Tallink bought
Superfast Ferries’ traffic on the Baltic Sea
and the three Superfast vessels employed
there in March 2006.
The Atlantic Vision is 203 metres long
and four diesel engines with a total output
of 46,000 kW provide a service speed of 27
knots. The ferry has capacity for about 1,000
passengers and 1,900 lane metres of cargo.
