SHIPS OF THE YEAR
The crew’s families were waiting at the quay when Fox Luna arrived to Fiskebäck south of Göteborg on October 11, 2008.
First bunker vessel with DP
The bunker vessel Fox Luna was
delivered to Swedish BRP Rederi AB in
early October.
The galvanized hull, like the one for the
sister ship Fox Sunrise – delivered in 2005
– was built in Riga and towed to Aas Mek
Verksted AS in Vestnes, Norway, where it
was fitted out and completed. The basic
design was made in cooperation with Abrahamsson
in Skärhamn, and the final solution
together with the yard in Norway.
The cargo tanks on the 80 metres long
vessel consists of six pairs of tanks for
heavy fuel oil (HFO) with a capacity of
3,500 cubic metres and five tanks of 240
cubic metres for diesel oil.
Insulating effect
The Fox Luna is built with double hull
and the vessel’s own bunker tanks are
placed between the cargo tanks and the
deck. The frames have been placed outside,
and on top of, the cargo tanks and
are hidden by the weather deck. When
having bunker tanks on top of the cargo
tanks, an insulating effect is reached that
will keep the HFO warm. If the HFO
needs additional heating, a thermal oil
heater connected to the tanks via a closed
system can be used.
Exact positioning
The Fox Luna is the first bunker vessel on
earth with a Dynamic Positioning (DP) system.
It is difficult to get the right coordination
between two vessels moored side by
side when bunkering at the roads. To avoid
this, the Fox Luna has two 360 ° 750 kW
turnable azimuth propulsion thrusters and
a manoeuvring retractable azimuth thruster
arrangement and with the help of the DPequipment
the vessel can stay in an exact
position when bunkering.
Two HFO cargo pumps are fitted; one
centrifugal pump with the capacity of 650
cubic metres per hour and a screw pump
delivering 430 cubic metres per hour. For
the diesel oil two screw pumps are available
with capacities of 200 and 120 cubic
metres per hour respectively.
The diesel-electric machinery consists of
five Volvo D16MG KC engines, each of
them developing 470 kW. Each engine is
