Five already chartered It seems that Maersk Supply Service has managed to fill a gap in the market, as they have already secured charters for five of eight vessels to come. The first, the Mærsk Topper, left the shipyard in October for Brazil for another long-term charter for Brazilian Petrobras. Over the years Petrobras has been a major client for Maersk Supply Service, which has often had up ten vessels on charter to Petrobras. One of the veterans is the Danish flagged Mærsk Clipper, which has served Petrobras since October 1984 on consecutive fixtures. The second vessel, the Mærsk Trader, is tied to Shell UK for a long period. Another two units have been assigned for work in the Baltic area, assisting the lay-barge that will lay a gas pipeline from Russia to Germany over a two-year period. The fifth vessel has been assigned to AGIP for service in West Africa. “We were in the market at the right time and apparently with the right price. We have customers knocking on our door offering charters for the coming vessels, but we are holding back in order to await delivery”, says Carsten Plougman. MAERSk SuPPly SERVICE The design is made by Vik & Sandvik in coordination with Maersk Supply Service. Maersk Supply Service has for years had an approach to market and profit sharing with the long-term clients. Instead of ripping off the clients if the spotmarket is high, it has turned out to be profitable in the long run to share the profit with the clients, which then secure steady reasonable rates in the low market. Better seagoing The Mærsk Topper is a relatively small supply ship, but the wider beam of 20 metres has already proven its value on the transfer from Norway to Brazil. It worked better in bad weather conditions than similar ships. The basic design called VS 472 comes from Vik & Sandvik. Also the design with the foredeck cover with very high plating as well as the cargo with similar high plating has proven very friendly and provides extra safety for personnel on deck. “The high plating provides a good and needed cover for our crews on deck”, says Carsten Plougman. “It is one of our main concerns to provide the necessary safety for men working in this environment under difficult conditions.” In the design it was essential to keep the cargo deck to a size of 600 cubic metres in order to have a ship flexible enough to take cargo duties if needed. The bollard pull ended at 160 tons, which is not at the high end, but rather medium capacity amongst anchor handlers. We have customers knocking on our door offering charters for the coming vessels. The MAN engine plant in Mærsk Topper is a highly flexible plant, consisting of two father-and-son plants. Each propeller is coupled to a MAN type 7L27/38 and 8L27/38 via gearbox. This enables sailing on the small engine in certain situations or coupling it all together if needed. The total output is 10,200 kW (15,300 horsepower). The service speed is around 16 knots. Under the cargo deck the ship can accommodate fuel, fresh water, cement, mud, brine and other bulk cargos in a number of tanks. The Mærsk Topper has accommodation for 30 persons all told, but it is usually sailed by a crew of 14 and can also provide passenger cabins for personnel transfer to oil fields.
