New ship to the medium supply segment For the first time in a long period Maersk Supply Service has not broken any record on delivery of a new type of vessel. In fact, the Mærsk Topper, delivered from Aker Yards at Brattvåg, is a small ship compared to the deliveries over the last decade. However, the ship is the first in a series that is a renewal of the medium size fleet segment of combined anchor handling and supply vessels with around 10,000– 12,000 horsepower. On the other hand, the delivery marks a return to Norwegian shipbuilders, which have not delivered to Maersk Supply Service since 2002, when Langsten Slip delivered the Maersk Handler. The Mærsk Topper breaks ground with its engines, which have been delivered by MAN. It is the first time ever that Maersk Supply Service sails with a MAN-engine plant in a newbuilding. The majority of newbuildings so far have been powered by MaK, only a few by Wärtsilä engines. New yard names The delivery yard changed ownership during the building period of Mærsk Topper. Originally both Brattvåg and Tulcea, Romania, where the hull was welded together, were a part of the Aker Group, but all Aker shipyard activities were sold to the Korean STX Group. The hull factory in Tulcea changed names to STX RO Offshore Tulcea SA, while the shipyard in Brattvåg is now called STX Norway Offshore AS Bratt våg. “We have tried to develop a new type of ship for the special segment that needs service in the future”, explains Carsten Plougman, head of Maersk Supply Service. “We had a number of ships dating back to 1980–1985, which were in good condition but were becoming technically outdated despite our upgrading program. Also there is a growing need for young tonnage in the market, as charterers nowadays look at the age of a particular vessel. But when a charterer representative is invited on board MAERSk SuPPly SERVICE SHIPS OF THE yEAR The Mærsk Topper took a more extensive sea trial than normal on the transfer from Norway directly to Brazilian waters for a long-term time charter for state-owned Petrobras.
