Catalytic system designers are faced with <strong>the</strong> dual challenge<br />

of meeting ever stricter regulations <strong>an</strong>d cutting costs<br />

of <strong>the</strong> catalyst systems <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>ies at <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>efront of meeting<br />

<strong>the</strong>se challenges is D<strong>an</strong>ish firm, Haldor Topsøe,<br />

which has a multi-facetted product portfolio<br />

<strong>an</strong>d asked him how legislation was<br />

influencing <strong>the</strong> comp<strong>an</strong>y’s adv<strong>an</strong>ces in<br />

catalytic solutions.<br />

Knudsen: Automotive <strong>vehicle</strong> m<strong>an</strong>ufacturers are facing<br />

increasing requirements to reduce emissions. The U.S.<br />

2010 regulations <strong>an</strong>d <strong>the</strong> Euro 6 legislations already place<br />

signifi<strong>c<strong>an</strong></strong>t dem<strong>an</strong>ds on <strong>the</strong> industry. Legislation<br />

will continue to focus on reduction of CO2<br />

emissions <strong>an</strong>d secondary emissions like<br />

NO2, N2O, etc. The industry will dem<strong>an</strong>d<br />

a reduction of PGM content in <strong>the</strong> catalysts<br />

<strong>an</strong>d packaging of catalysts in<br />

<strong>the</strong> after treatment system. Integrating<br />

SCR functionality in <strong>the</strong> DPF is a<br />

challenging requirement from m<strong>an</strong>y<br />

OEMs.<br />

Knudsen: Haldor Topsøe is a<br />

relatively new player in <strong>the</strong> automotive<br />

industry as we first entered it on <strong>an</strong><br />

industrial scale with <strong>the</strong> introduction of<br />

Euro 4 <strong>for</strong> heavy duty <strong>vehicle</strong>s. We have<br />

built up facilities <strong>for</strong> validation of catalysts <strong>an</strong>d<br />

systems enabling us to offer application engineering to<br />

coating which is platinum free <strong>an</strong>d also has <strong>the</strong> ability to reduce<br />
