GGAILOR, THOMAS FRANK (17 September 1856, Jackson, Miss.–3 October1935, Sewanee, Tenn.). Education: B.A., Racine College, 1876; S.T.B., GeneralTheological Seminary, 1879. Career: Rector, Church of the Messiah, Pulaski,Tenn., 1879–82; professor of ecclesiastical history, School of Theology of theUniversity of the South, 1882–90; chaplain, University of the South, 1883–93;vice-chancellor, University of the South, 1890–93; chancellor, 1908–35; bishopcoadjutor, diocese of Tennessee, 1893–98; bishop, diocese of Tennessee, 1898–1935; chairman, House of Bishops, 1916–22; presi<strong>de</strong>nt, National Council of theEpiscopal Church, 1919–25.A bishop and influential educator in the post–Civil War South, Thomas Gailorwas born in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1856, but he was raised in Memphis, Tennessee.As a boy he witnessed the <strong>de</strong>vastation caused by the war, and his father,who was an officer in a Tennessee regiment, was killed in battle in 1862. A highchurch Episcopalian, Gailor was educated at Racine College in Wisconsin and atGeneral Theological Seminary in New York. Ordained a <strong>de</strong>acon in 1879 and apriest in 1880, he began his ministry at a parish in Pulaski, Tennessee—the townin which the Ku Klux Klan was first organized. In 1882 Gailor began his longassociation with the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Serving at“Sewanee” for 53 years, he was the only person in the history of the school tohave been professor, chaplain, vice-chancellor (presi<strong>de</strong>nt), and chancellor (chairmanof the board). His influence with such northern capitalists as J.P. Morgan*and Andrew Carnegie also enabled him to secure important financial contributionsfor the school, and un<strong>de</strong>r his distinguished lea<strong>de</strong>rship the university became acenter for the education of white Episcopal clergy in the southern states.Possessing a fine voice, an imposing physique, a good sense of humor, and a
