His support of the ecumenical movement was <strong>de</strong>monstrated in hisgift of $100,000 to begin preparations for a world conference on faith and or<strong>de</strong>r,and he was a major benefactor of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Some ofhis other benefactions inclu<strong>de</strong>d a tra<strong>de</strong> school for the boys of St. George’s Church,a new parish house and rectory for the church, a <strong>de</strong>partment of natural history atTrinity College in Hartford, and a complete electrical plant for St. Paul’s Cathedralin London. He also served as a <strong>de</strong>puty to the General Convention, where hedutifully sat and listened to the often tedious ecclesiastical proceedings.Morgan died in Italy in March 1913. He was so well known in the EpiscopalChurch that the bishops of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York all participatedin his funeral at St. George’s Church.BibliographyB. He was the greatgrandsonof the eighteenth-century Lutheran lea<strong>de</strong>r Henry Melchior Muhlenberg.Baptized in a Lutheran church, he first became acquainted with the Episcopalliturgy at the age of five, when his family began attending services at ChristChurch in Phila<strong>de</strong>lphia. After studying theology un<strong>de</strong>r the direction of WilliamWhite,* the bishop of Pennsylvania, Muhlenberg was ordained a <strong>de</strong>acon in 1817and a priest in 1820. Although he served briefly in parishes in Pennsylvania andNew York, he was chiefly interested in the <strong>de</strong>velopment of social service institutions.One of his most important experiments began in the spring of 1828, whenhe opened the Flushing Institute on Long Island, New York.
