310TYNG, STEPHEN HIGGINSONserved at St. John’s Church in Georgetown, he aided the founding of the VirginiaTheological Seminary in Alexandria. At the beginning of Tyng’s ministry, evangelicals were the dominant party inthe Episcopal Church, but by the second half of the nineteenth century, both theTractarian and the broad church movements had begun to supplant them. Standingfirmly against this trend, Tyng remained an unbending evangelical who resistedritualism and theological liberalism with equal fervor. As he remarked at the endof his ministry at St. George’s in New York, “I profess myself . . . to be one ofthese narrow-minded men, holding with unshrinking grasp the inspired word ofGod; adhering to the old paths and walking in them.” Despite such views, Tyngstrongly disapproved of the action of George David Cummins* in founding theReformed Episcopal Church in 1873. He viewed Cummins’s enterprise as a sadbetrayal of the evangelical party within the Episcopal Church.Declining health, both physical and mental, prompted Tyng’s resignation fromSt. George’s in 1878. He retired to Irvington-on-Hudson, New York, where hedied seven years later.BibliographyA. A Memoir of the Rev.
