Among the group wassixty year old Arthur Williams, owner of a photographic studio.Williams, fearing it was someone he knew, asked thepolice officer to see the body. When he did, he told the officerthat it was Stella Kale, as he was “afraid it would be.’’State Police, led by Lieutenant. John Stockes, set upheadquarters at the beach police station. Williams told themthat Stella was his studio assistant and had started workingjust before Memorial Day. She was from Lawrence and hadgiven her age as twenty-two.Stella had a room behind the studio, and the eveningbefore she told Williams she was going for a walk on thebeach. She looked at her watch and told him, “it’s 9:30, Ishouldn’t be gone very long.’’ When she wasn’t back by midnight,he said, “I became worried and went out to look forher.’’ Unable to find her, he returned to the studio and fellasleep in a chair.
