The AssistantPost Mistress, Hanna C<strong>of</strong>fin, also hearing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> robbery,went to <strong>the</strong> Post Office armed with a revolver and found <strong>the</strong>chief dead.TRAGEDY ON SALISBURY BEACHAsmall crowd was beginning to ga<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>Salisbury</strong>Beach in <strong>the</strong> early morning <strong>of</strong> June 6, 1927 when <strong>the</strong>body <strong>of</strong> a young woman was found. Among <strong>the</strong> group wassixty year old Arthur Williams, owner <strong>of</strong> a photographic studio.Williams, fearing it was someone he knew, asked <strong>the</strong>police <strong>of</strong>ficer to see <strong>the</strong> body. When he did, he told <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficerthat it was Stella Kale, as he was “afraid it would be.’’State Police, led by Lieutenant. John Stockes, set upheadquarters at <strong>the</strong> beach police station. Williams told <strong>the</strong>mthat Stella was his studio assistant and had started workingjust before Memorial Day. She was from Lawrence and hadgiven her age as twenty-two.Stella had a room behind <strong>the</strong> studio, and <strong>the</strong> eveningbefore she told Williams she was going for a walk on <strong>the</strong>beach. She looked at her watch and told him, “it’s 9:30, Ishouldn’t be gone very long.’’ When she wasn’t back by midnight,he said, “I became worried and went out to look forher.’’ Unable to find her, he returned to <strong>the</strong> studio and fellasleep in a chair. When he awoke at 7:00 A.M. he saw thatStella had not returned. When he saw <strong>the</strong> crowd ga<strong>the</strong>red on<strong>the</strong> beach, he feared <strong>the</strong> worst.Police were surprised when Williams said she looked a<strong>the</strong>r watch, for she was not wearing one when she was found.Police later learned from her parents that <strong>the</strong>y had given88
