The ladder used to climb to <strong>the</strong> ro<strong>of</strong>was engulfed in flames before <strong>the</strong>y came down.While Hotel Cushing burned, <strong>the</strong> night clerk, JosephDaley <strong>of</strong> Lawrence, and William McKee, rushed back into<strong>the</strong> building to check if Miss Mildred Allen had gotten outsafely. She had been ill and was not able to make it out onher own. When <strong>the</strong>y reached her room, <strong>the</strong>y found she hadbeen taken out. By this time, <strong>the</strong> smoke had become so thickit was difficult to find <strong>the</strong>ir way out. Spectators believed<strong>the</strong>m to have perished, but <strong>the</strong>y were able to reach safetyjust as <strong>the</strong> middle section <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hotel caved in.Louis Blanchard <strong>of</strong> Amesbury was forced to jump from asecond story window, severely injuring his back. He wasimmediately taken to <strong>the</strong> Homeopathic Hospital in Newburyport.William Fowler, owner <strong>of</strong> many area cottages, tried tosave <strong>the</strong> furnishings at <strong>the</strong> “Castle Mona’’ but was overcomeby smoke. He had to be removed from <strong>the</strong> building and wastreated by Dr. Donahue <strong>of</strong> Haverhill.At one cottage, a Mrs. George Morse <strong>of</strong> Haverhill had tobe carried to safety by Ernest Brodeau, also <strong>of</strong> Haverhill.The occupants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cottage were outside watching <strong>the</strong> firewhen one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m remembered <strong>the</strong> sixty-year old lady wasstill inside. Brodeau rushed in to get her.Just before dusk a crew from <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong> Beach LifeSaving Station, with Captain Charles, came with a largehook. They tore apart <strong>the</strong> small buildings to help stop <strong>the</strong>fire. The heat from <strong>the</strong> fire was so intense <strong>the</strong> firemen had adifficult time keeping <strong>the</strong> hoses from melting. Several hundredfeet <strong>of</strong> hose had al<strong>read</strong>y been burned.Approximately 125 buildings were destroyed by <strong>the</strong> fire.The Cushing Hotel, Atlantic House, <strong>the</strong> Anchorage, CastleMona, <strong>the</strong> Hotel Comet, <strong>the</strong> Dance Hall, <strong>the</strong> Cable House,71
