<strong>Salisbury</strong> Police Departmen<strong>the</strong>r a watch for graduation a few years before. She wore itwhen she left home to begin work at <strong>the</strong> beach.Stella’s fa<strong>the</strong>r supplied <strong>the</strong> police with <strong>the</strong> make andserial number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> watch. The next day a full description<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> watch was published in <strong>the</strong> newspaper.Meanwhile, Patrolman Red Foley, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong> PoliceDepartment remembered that he had ordered a “suspiciouslooking man’’ from <strong>the</strong> beach on <strong>the</strong> afternoon <strong>of</strong> June 5. Theman was bald and had a mustache. After being told to leave,he boarded a street car headed for Hampton Beach. ThenFoley left for Hampton on his motorcycle. At <strong>the</strong> same time aKensington, N.H. man was headed towards <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong>Police Station with Stella Kale’s watch.He told police he was driving through Hampton Beachon June 6, and stopped to pick up a hitch-hiker. The mansaid he was out <strong>of</strong> work and <strong>of</strong>fered to sell his dead wife’swatch for $3.00. The man was bald and had a mustache. TheKensington man told police he bought <strong>the</strong> watch for his ownwife. The watch checked with <strong>the</strong> description <strong>of</strong> Stella Kale’swatch.Foley went to a drug store in Hampton Beach andnoticed a card <strong>of</strong> sun glasses with one pair <strong>of</strong> glasses gone,<strong>the</strong> same kind <strong>of</strong> glasses found near Stella’s body. He askedwho <strong>the</strong> customer was that bought <strong>the</strong> sun glasses. He wastold by <strong>the</strong> druggist that it was one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barbers next door.Foley, playing a hunch, asked, “<strong>the</strong> bald headed one with amustache.’’ The druggist replied, “Oh, you know him?’’ Theowner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barber shop, when questioned by Foley, said hehad fired him a couple <strong>of</strong> days before because he drank toomuch. Not only whiskey, but drank practically his wholesupply <strong>of</strong> witch hazel. An empty witch hazel bottle had alsobeen found near Stella’s body. The owner <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shop toldFoley <strong>the</strong> man had given his name as George Harrison.89
