SALISBURY HISTORYGLEN FOWLERSALISBURY ARTISTGlen Fowler was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts onSeptember 27, 1934, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Clyde and Edith (Dobson)Fowler. He was <strong>the</strong> grandson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> well-known gospelsinger Caleb Fowler <strong>of</strong> Seabrook, New Hampshire.Glen was sixteen years old, attending Newburyport HighSchool, when an automobile he was riding in hit a tree inExeter, New Hampshire. With no visible external injuries, itwas believed Glen was unhurt. This proved to be untrue. Inactuality, he received a broken neck and three broken vertebrae.This left him paralized, forcing him to spend <strong>the</strong> nextfive years in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.Glen was determined to rebuild his life. His love <strong>of</strong> ar<strong>the</strong>lped him through those first few years. He turned topainting as a means <strong>of</strong> supporting himself, no easy task for aparaplegic. He learned to paint holding <strong>the</strong> brush betweenhis teeth.While in <strong>the</strong> hospital school in Canton, Massachusetts,Glen met Joanne Rogers who was taking a nursing course.They fell in love and were married in April <strong>of</strong> 1958 in <strong>the</strong>Newburyport Baptist church. They lived on Sandy Lane in<strong>Salisbury</strong>, and were later blessed with a son, Wayne. Joanneworked with her husband to help him become <strong>the</strong> artist hedreamed <strong>of</strong> becoming. She would drive him around while helooked for a scene to paint. Joanne would <strong>the</strong>n take a photograph.From <strong>the</strong> photo, and from Glen’s memory, he would<strong>the</strong>n paint <strong>the</strong> scene.In 1957 Glen submitted one <strong>of</strong> his paintings to <strong>the</strong>Famous Artist’s School in Westport, Connecticut.
