SALISBURY HISTORYherd, born in <strong>Salisbury</strong>’s East Parish in 1739.By pr<strong>of</strong>ession a physician, he became a minister and wasordained in Stratham, New Hampshire in 1771, and becamepastor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist Church in Haverhill.Along with <strong>the</strong> regular Sunday meeting, Dr. HezekiahSmith <strong>of</strong> Haverhill and Dr. Shepherd began holding meetingsin private dwellings. When those <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist faithfrom <strong>Salisbury</strong>, Amesbury and South Hampton became sonumerous, <strong>the</strong> meetings were moved to <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong>Jonathan Clough <strong>of</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong>, one and a half miles from <strong>Salisbury</strong>Village on <strong>the</strong> Road to Seabrook.Historical Discoveries, by B.P. BrownDR. JACOB F. SPAULDINGDr. Jacob F. Spaulding was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshireon July 11, 1842, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Benjamin and Hannah(Barker) Spaulding. His ancestors took part in <strong>the</strong> BostonTea Party and fought in <strong>the</strong> Revolutionary War.He was educated in Nashua, New Hamsphire. After completinghigh school he worked in a cabinet shop and studiedfor <strong>the</strong> ministry in <strong>the</strong> evening. Dr. Spaulding preached hisfirst sermon in Antrim, New Hampshire in 1870. He alsoserved <strong>the</strong> churches <strong>of</strong> New Ipswich, Londonderry, NewHampshire and Hampton, New Hampshire, each time serving<strong>the</strong> three year limit allowed a methodist minister. Hetwice served <strong>the</strong> East Parish Church in <strong>Salisbury</strong>, 1879-1880and 1884-1886, and for twenty years he held services during<strong>the</strong> summer at Hope Chapel on <strong>Salisbury</strong> Beach. On his79th birthday Spaulding was tendered a testimonial by <strong>the</strong><strong>Salisbury</strong> Beach Board <strong>of</strong> Trade, and was presented an106
