SALISBURY HISTORYherd, born in Salisbury’s East Parish in 1739.By profession a physician, he became a minister and wasordained in Stratham, New Hampshire in 1771, and becamepastor of the Baptist Church in Haverhill.Along with the regular Sunday meeting, Dr. HezekiahSmith of Haverhill and Dr. Shepherd began holding meetingsin private dwellings. When those of the Baptist faithfrom Salisbury, Amesbury and South Hampton became sonumerous, the meetings were moved to the home ofJonathan Clough of Salisbury, one and a half miles from SalisburyVillage on the Road to Seabrook.Historical Discoveries, by B.P. BrownDR. JACOB F. SPAULDINGDr. Jacob F. Spaulding was born in Hillsboro, New Hampshireon July 11, 1842, the son of Benjamin and Hannah(Barker) Spaulding. His ancestors took part in the BostonTea Party and fought in the Revolutionary War.He was educated in Nashua, New Hamsphire. After completinghigh school he worked in a cabinet shop and studiedfor the ministry in the evening. Dr. Spaulding preached hisfirst sermon in Antrim, New Hampshire in 1870. He alsoserved the churches of New Ipswich, Londonderry, NewHampshire and Hampton, New Hampshire, each time servingthe three year limit allowed a methodist minister. Hetwice served the East Parish Church in Salisbury, 1879-1880and 1884-1886, and for twenty years he held services duringthe summer at Hope Chapel on Salisbury Beach.
