SALISBURY HISTORYDR. LOUIS SUMNER KAPLANLouis Sumner Kaplan was born November 27, 1908 inBoston, Massachusetts, <strong>the</strong> fourth <strong>of</strong> ten children. Heworked his way through college and medical school by laboringon <strong>the</strong> fish piers <strong>of</strong> Boston. He graduated with honors in1935.He moved to <strong>Salisbury</strong> in 1938, and in 1941 marriedRuth Sterns <strong>of</strong> Brookline, Massachusetts.During WWII Dr. Kaplan joined <strong>the</strong> Army. He served forfour years as Captain in <strong>the</strong> Army Medical Corp with <strong>the</strong>Amphibian Engineers in <strong>the</strong> South Pacific under <strong>the</strong> command<strong>of</strong> General Douglas MacArthur. He earned four battlestars for service in: Luzon (on D-Day), Moratai Island, NewGuinea, and Bougainville. He also received <strong>the</strong> BronzeIndian Head, <strong>the</strong> Phillaphine Liberation Star, <strong>the</strong> VictoryRibbon and <strong>the</strong> American Theater Ribbon.In 1946 he returned to <strong>Salisbury</strong> with his wife and twosons, Arnold and Richard. It was at this time that he began<strong>the</strong> life <strong>of</strong> a country doctor. He served <strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong>for twenty-seven years from his Beach Road home and <strong>of</strong>fice.In 1955 he was appointed to <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Health andheld that <strong>of</strong>fice until his death on May 14, 1966.138
