Ministersorgan for use at <strong>the</strong> chapel.During <strong>the</strong> first term as minister <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> East ParishChurch in <strong>Salisbury</strong> he began <strong>the</strong> practice <strong>of</strong> medicine, havingtrained himself by intensive study. For forty years heserved <strong>the</strong> town as a physician, and established a small hospitalat Brown’s Park on Lafayette Road in which an <strong>of</strong>ficecall cost 50 cents. He enjoyed being a doctor and eventuallygave up much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church work to devote most <strong>of</strong> his timeto <strong>the</strong> sick, always with a word <strong>of</strong> comfort and prayer.On June 6, 1921, <strong>the</strong> town named <strong>the</strong> new grammarschool <strong>the</strong> Jacob F. Spaulding Schoool in his honor. A petitionbearing <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> 500 residents, requesting that <strong>the</strong>school be named for him, was presented by Mrs. FrancesPettingill. George E. Dow, Chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Selectmen,accepted on behalf <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> town. The plaque bearing hisname was unveiled by <strong>the</strong> Spaulding grandchildren, and apoem written by Mrs. E.F. Newell, in tribute to <strong>the</strong> doctor,was <strong>read</strong> by school principal Julia Noyes. The dedicationprayer was given by Reverend E.F. Newell, D.D. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> EastParish Church, and an address was given by Dr. FrankWright, deputy commissioner <strong>of</strong> Massachusetts schools.After <strong>the</strong> benediction given by Dr. Spaulding, a schoolreception was held by Chairpersons Mrs. Pettingill and Mrs.Oberg. A smoking jacket was presented to Dr. Spaulding by<strong>the</strong> school children, and a tea was given by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong>Grange, with Mrs. E.P. Deal as Chairman. In <strong>the</strong> evening, abonfire in <strong>the</strong> park was <strong>the</strong> grand finale. The townspeoplealso ga<strong>the</strong>red around a piano for a community sing, withAlbert Lunt <strong>of</strong> Newburyport, as <strong>the</strong> leader. Miss Es<strong>the</strong>r Merrillwas chairman <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> bonfire event.Dr. Spaulding was on <strong>the</strong> board <strong>of</strong> trustees <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> AnnaJaques Hospital, trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong> Savings in Newburyport,trustee <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Putnam Free School, and president107
