Prominent CitizensSHERB EATONWilliam Sherburne Eaton, “Sherb” to all who knew him,was born in <strong>Salisbury</strong>, Massachusetts in 1900, andlived his entire life on Beach Road. He was born on <strong>the</strong> diningroom table <strong>of</strong> his family home, with Doctor JacobSpaulding charging fifty cents for a house call. The houseSherb lived in was built by his fa<strong>the</strong>r in 1884 on land givenhis fa<strong>the</strong>r, by his grandfa<strong>the</strong>r.When Sherb was ten years old he began helping hisfa<strong>the</strong>r open graves for burials in <strong>the</strong> Long Hill Cemetery. Hewould later be appointed Burial Agent for <strong>the</strong> <strong>To</strong>wn <strong>of</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong>.Sherb attended <strong>the</strong> one room Pike School when he wasyoung. In 1976 he took part in a special ribbon cutting cermonywhen <strong>the</strong> <strong>Salisbury</strong> Historical Commission had <strong>the</strong>school restored and re-dedicated. Previously it had beenused as a fire station. When Sherb was seventeen years oldhe had to discontinue school to work on <strong>the</strong> farm. The followingyear, 1918, Sherb’s fa<strong>the</strong>r died and Sherb did odd jobs tohelp keep <strong>the</strong> family going. He had learned farming from hisfa<strong>the</strong>r and continued to farm all his life.When he was very young he began helping his fa<strong>the</strong>rstack salt marsh hay. He was taught how to make <strong>the</strong> stacksso <strong>the</strong>y would be water tight. Some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hay was broughtinto <strong>the</strong>ir barn on sleds while some was brought out on agundalow built by Sherbs fa<strong>the</strong>r.Over <strong>the</strong> years, Sherb built several boats. He was also atug boat operator at <strong>the</strong> Portsmouth Navy Yard.On April 15, 1981, Sherb was presented a citation fromGovernor Edward King for an outstanding career, and for147
