20 Faculty Matters Summer 2012 meet the faculty Reynaldo Dinulong continued from page 19 Dinulong decided to focus his Navy career on medicine. “I like to help people,” he explains. The Navy provided him extensive nursing training which he then used to provide primary medical care to patients on Navy ships. “I was afraid at first,” says Dinulong, recalling his first patient, who came to him with abdominal pain. “I thought, ‘What the hell am I doing here?’ It was a scary moment.” He correctly diagnosed the patient with appendicitis—and his confidence began to grow. Dinulong’s core nursing skills were honed during his accomplished 25-year Navy career. One of his proudest moments was making the senior ranking of Chief Petty Officer while deployed in the Gulf. When the captain pinned the anchor—Navy-speak for the insignia of the rank—on his shoulder, “I actually cried,” he remembers. Helping veterans transition Dinulong retired from active duty in 2007 and he, his wife and their two children now live in Hawaii, which he calls “paradise.” He works as a nurse case manager for the Tripler Army Medical Center’s Warrior Transition Unit in Schofield Barracks. In this role, he ensures that injured soldiers have all the support and care they require to return to active duty or to civilian life. From medical care to career counseling, it’s Dinulong’s responsibility to put all of the soldiers’ post-service care together, he explains. “You are in charge of the overall health of the soldier.” He says he wants to ensure the soldiers’ sacrifices are paid back to them. Dinulong explains that because of his Navy career, which saw him serve in the Gulf and Iraq wars, he understands what his Tripler patients are going through. He’s been deployed with soldiers who have been injured. “I’ve been there. I’ve done that. And it’s a way for me to make sure they’ll be OK,” he says. Education’s impact Dinulong recently taught Ethics: Health Care and Social Responsibility at University of Phoenix’s Hawaii Campus. He developed a passion for teaching while in the Navy, where he was an instructor and master training specialist. Dinulong enjoys teaching. It’s a break in his normal routine, plus he likes being able to share his knowledge with students, he explains. “Hopefully they’ll learn from my experiences.” “ If teaching is your passion, give your heart and soul to that passion and think of your students as your replacement. What would you like them to be?” Dinulong’s time in the Navy not only taught him the basics of changing dressings and closing wounds, but showed him that communication with patients is key, he says. The ability to listen and understand is also paramount to his work at Tripler. Building trust and working with honor and integrity is pivotal to nursing, he explains, and he imparts these important values to his students. Inspiring the next generation Overall, Dinulong encourages his students to look beyond earning a diploma or a degree and to strive to be the best they can be. It’s important to challenge the students to be critical thinkers, he says, adding that it is no longer enough to memorize textbooks. Dinulong is a key part of the University’s state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab program. The program uses mock hospital rooms
and high tech manikins to provide students realistic, hard-hitting nursing lessons. He provides the voice for the life-size manikins, which not only speak, but breathe, cry and bleed during simulated medical situations that the nursing students work through. The simulation labs provide a safe environment for the students to learn in without the fear of mistakes, he says. “It is a place to challenge them,” he adds, noting the exercises help them develop not only nursing skills, but that critical thinking ability that is so important to the profession. Dinulong looks at his students as future leaders. He says it’s so rewarding to have a student, on graduation day, thank him for his motivation and encouragement. The best way to pay tribute to those people that helped you succeed is to help your own students succeed, he says. “If teaching is your passion, give your heart and soul to that passion and think of your students as your replacement.
