64 Faculty Matters Summer 2012 note worthy awards, achievements, promotions and appearances U niversity of Phoenix faculty members are skilled professionals who bring in-depth, real-world experience to the classroom to benefit our students. Noteworthy highlights accomplishments our faculty are making in their respective fields in terms of industry awards, promotions, book publications and appearances. Arizona Mesa Robert Carl Winsor II (Brian), Ph.D., a faculty member with the College of Education at UOPX, was awarded two charter schools by the Arizona School Board for Charter Schools. Arkansas Phoenix Joseph A. Zodl, a faculty member with the School of Business at UOPX, released the fifth edition of his book, Export-Import: Everything You and Your Company Need to Know to Compete in World Markets. The book is a guide for companies entering the world of international trade, or improving their business model. Little Rock Edmond William Davis, a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, published Pioneering African-American Aviators Featuring the Tuskegee Airmen of Arkansas. This supplemental resource book covers categories including women’s history, African-American history, civil rights issues and race relations. The book also exposes many trailblazers in civil and military aviation. California Del Mar Marilyn K. Simon, Ph.D., and Jim Goes, Ph.D., both faculty members with the School of Advanced Studies at UOPX, co-authored Dissertation and Scholarly Research: Recipes for Success. The book provides guidance for those working through the dissertation process, from beginning to end. Simon resides in Del Mar. Goes resides in Cottage Grove, Oregon. Georgia Canton Virginia Louise Merlini, Ph.D., a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, was selected to the 2012 inaugural class of the Georgia Women’s Policy Institute. The GWPI provides advocacy and leadership training for about 12 women each year in order to help increase the number of women involved in the public policy process. Idaho Saint Anthony Rachel A. Gonzales, DM, a faculty member with the College of Nursing at UOPX, was selected as the new CEO of Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Idaho. Illinois Chicago Jocelyn Carita Thornton, D.Min., a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, co-facilitated the Fall Retreat of the Sustaining Pastoral Excellence Leadership Cohort of the Evangelical Covenant Church in October, 2011. Thornton also had a portion of her thesis published as an article entitled “Preaching Through a Faith Crisis.” The article was published in a special issue of The Journal of the Liturgical Conference. Michigan Sturgis Shanda Hansma Blue Easterday, Ph.D., a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, presented an off-site poetry reading as part of the Associated Writing Programs annual conference in Chicago. Hosted in a different city each year, the conference and fair aim “to celebrate the outstanding authors, teachers, writing programs, literary centers and small press publishers of that region,” according to the association’s website.
Missouri Lathrop Debra Gayle Stewart, Ed.D., a faculty member with the College of Education at UOPX, published, I Care to Share: A Manual for the Loving Care of_________. Designed to help both primary caregivers and the loved ones receiving care, the book provides prompts for the recording of all details and preferences necessary in order to help ensure a high standard of care is maintained—and to ensure continuity can be assured should the responsibility of care be transferred to someone else. Ohio Mayfield Village Phillip Joseph Stella, a faculty member with the College of Social Sciences at UOPX, received the Volunteer of the Year Award from the Council of Smaller Enterprises of the Greater Cleveland Partnership. The award recognized Stella’s work as chair of the 2011 Small Business Conference Task Team. Oregon Portland Shyvonne Ballosingh Williams, a faculty member with the College of Social Sciences at UOPX, published, Unlocking the Power of Words: Applying the Seven Keys in the Partner Model to Create Authentic Conversations. The book explores the Partner model, a means of improving communication and enabling a person to let go of barriers to creating stronger relationships. Texas Austin Nicholas Marvin Courtright, a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, published Punchline. The book of poetry is built around quotes from the likes of Albert Einstein, Carl Sagan, Fredrico Garcia Lorca and Shunryu Suzuki, and uses the medium of poetry to explore philosophical questions. Houston Anthony Bruno, a faculty member with the College of Information Systems and Technology at UOPX, published, CCDA 860-864 Official Cert Guide. The book is a learning resource for internetworking professionals to help obtain the Cisco Certified Design Associate certification. Utah Salt Lake City Brad C. Parkin, a faculty member with the School of Business at UOPX, was named one of the state’s top marketing professionals by Utah Business magazine at their annual Sales and Marketer of the Year awards. Parkin is Associate Zoo Director over Marketing Services at Utah’s Hogle Zoo. Virginia Charlottesville Carolyn Ramwell, a faculty member with the College of Natural Sciences at UOPX, spoke at the American Burn Association’s 44th Annual Meeting, on International Burn Care. Ramwell also co-authored the article “Recession, Reform, Redesignation – Oh My! Find out how to Energize Staff for Magnet Redesignation in Challenging Times” published in 2012 Magnet Update: Recognizing Nursing Excellence in the American Nurse Today. Washington facultymatters.com 65 Pasco Jason Andrew Bond, a faculty member with the School of Business at UOPX, published Hammerhead, a science-fiction novel where the central character, Jeffrey Holt, is a combat veteran who works tearing apart decommissioned ships that have crash-landed in the Nevada desert. Snoqualmie Nathan Kositsky, a faculty member with the College of Humanities at UOPX, published Visits to Issaquah. The novel depicts the tale of a therapist who enters Native American ceremonies, where he meets the spirit of the lover who betrayed him. university of Phoenix faculty members are welcomed to send a paragraph about their recent industry success to FacultyMatters@phoenix.edu.
