The PASCAL <strong>Chronicle</strong>PASCAL schools promote the importance of learning a second languageThe Languages Department of PASCAL English School Lefkosia and Διιεληθή ρνιή ΠΑΘΑΙ Lefkosiaorganized two lectures aimed at promoting the importance of learning French as a secondlanguage in an effort to raise awareness of the importance of learning foreign languages. Thefirst lecture took place on the 31 st October 2011 when Mr. Prodromos Prodromou was invited tospeak to Year 3 students of PASCAL English School Lefkosia about the role of foreign languagesin their lives. Mr. Prodromou, a former Member of Parliament and former president of the AlumniAssociation for French universities, explained that is it essential for young Cypriot students tolearn at least 2 and a half foreign languages, in order to have an advantage over their Europeancounterparts in France and Germany. Mr. Prodromou‘s speech was both educational and interestingand had a lasting effect on the students.On November 1, 2011 Ms Androulla Vassiliou delivered a speech on the importance of foreignlanguages to Year 3 students of PASCAL English School and Διιεληθή ρνιή ΠΑΘΑΙ Lefkosia.Ms Androulla Vassiliou who is currently the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism,Youth and Sport is the foremost authority on the subject of language learning in Cyprus.Ms Vassiliou spoke about the role of language learning in the lives of young students todayand the importance of knowing at least two languages apart from your mother tongue. Shespoke about future prospects for those students who know foreign languages in relation to globalizationand the effect it has had on people today. Ms Vassiliou‘s speech left the students feelingenthusiastic about language learning.26
