¿Cómo saber si usted ha sido discriminado enasuntos de vivienda?
No siempre es fácil saber
si usted ha sido víctima
de discriminación en
lo que respecta a viviendas. Es
poco probable que escuche un
comentario directo, como por
ejemplo “No le alquilaré este
apartamento porque usted es
una mujer joven y soltera” o
“No le venderé esta casa porque
usted es negro y este es un
vecindario blanco”. En cambio,
las señales de discriminación
son más sutiles. Una manera de
determinar si han discriminado
contra usted es buscar la ayuda
de una agencia u organización
que puede llevar a cabo una investigación.
Algunas organizaciones privadas
financiadas por el Departamento
Federal de Vivienda
y Desarrollo Urbano (HUD,
por sus siglas en inglés) investigan
quejas de discriminación

against is to seek help from an

Mr. Lowery calls the real estate
agency and talks to Mr. Connor,
who tells him that the apartment
is available and asks him to stop
by his office to see him. Mr.
Lowery comes to the office thirty
minutes later, and introduces
himself to Mr. Connor. Mr. Connor
says, “There must be some
mistake.” Mr. Lowery reassures

responsible for all the details of the

the managing agent, and the
chairman had informed him personally

“mixed” marriage and whether this
has affected their children. Finally,
they don’t get the approval of the
board.
Example 3. Ms. Abernanthy,
an African American, sees an
apartment she likes. She then calls
the realtor, Mr. Davis, and tells him
she wishes to rent the apartment.
Mr. Davis informs her that the
apartment is rented. Ms. Aber-

with her because he thought her

and “insistent”.

behavior is not always obvious
and direct, but remember that it
