Oakland County Michigan Works!
Oakland County's is one of 16 Michigan
Works! agencies in Michigan providing free
workforce services to businesses and talent
at the county’s eight Michigan Works! Career
Centers. Locations are in Ferndale, Highland,
Novi, Oak Park, Pontiac, Southfield, Troy and
Waterford.
Michigan Talent Connect An online
marketplace connecting job applicants with
Michigan employers looking to hire.
Job Seeker Programs A variety of job
search, technology, social media, career
management, internships, training and
education resources along with workshops,
events and job/career fairs.
Business Services Offering talent
recruitment, candidate pre-screening,
workforce assessment, training support, job
posting, labor market information, hiring
incentives, layoff support and other resources.
Veterans Services Oakland County provides
assistance to veterans seeking employment
as well as to employers looking to hire veterans.
Education & Training Oakland County
Michigan Works! provides information on
education and training opportunities that
include adult education, community college,
internships and apprenticeship programs.
Employer-Based Training Programs
Through Michigan Works! on-the-job
training, customized instruction, internships,
registered apprenticeships and training
for workers, employers can secure talent
consistent with their needs. Most programs
are in the manufacturing, health care and
information technology/media fields.
Michigan New Jobs Training Program
Cost-free training at community colleges for
new employees of companies creating new
jobs or expanding operations in Michigan.
Businesses can partner with a community
college to tailor a program to their needs.
Oakland Schools Career-Focused Education
Curriculum at Oakland Schools Technical
Campuses encompasses advanced training
for high school juniors and seniors in nine
clusters: biotechnology and environmental
science, iTEAM (IT, entrepreneurship
and advanced marketing), construction
technology, cosmetology, culinary arts/
hospitality, engineering/emerging
technologies, health sciences, transportation
technology and visual imaging technology.
TRANSPORTATION
Oakland County is a global hub for commerce.
The county’s central location in Southeast
Michigan means convenient air access to
most North American consumer markets,
shorter flight distances to international
markets and a developed infrastructure that
connects air and freight facilities with other
regional transportation ports.
BY AIR
Six major airports service Oakland County.
Oakland County International Airport
Located in Waterford, OCIA is Southeast
Michigan’s premier corporate and general
aviation airport. One of the busiest general
aviation airports in the world, it’s home to
over 500 aircraft and used by virtually every
Fortune 500 company in the United States.

Oakland/Troy Airport The county’s
“executive” airport, Oakland/Troy is used
by business travelers and tourists for private,
corporate and charter flights. It provides
airfreight, aircraft maintenance and fuel
services.
Oakland/Southwest Airport Located in New
Hudson, the primary business district in Lyon
Township, this airport services southwestern
Oakland County residents and businesses.
Bishop International Airport Located north of
Oakland County in Flint, this full-service airport
features nonstop flights to Atlanta, Baltimore/
Washington, Chicago, Fort Myers, Las Vegas,
Minneapolis, Orlando and Tampa.
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport
A short distance by freeway, Detroit’s Metro
Airport provides service from 13 scheduled
passenger airlines offering more than 1,100
flights a day to and from nearly 150 nonstop
destinations on four continents. It’s also a
key hub for Delta Airlines, which in partnership
with its Delta Connection carriers offers
services to 334 destinations in 64 countries
on six continents.
Willow Run Airport is just a few miles west
of Detroit Metro Airport and serves cargo,
corporate and general aviation clients. Its four
runways, 24-hour FAA tower and U.S. Customs
operations provide easy access for users.
BY RAIL
Amtrak provides train travel in Southeast
Michigan, operating between multiple stations
in Oakland County and offering service to
East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Port
Huron, Chicago and beyond.
CSX operates and maintains more than 1,200
miles of track in Michigan, with a major rail yard
and intermodal and TRANSFLO terminals
in Detroit, as well as a TRANSFLO terminal in
Oakland County’s Wixom. In 2014, CSX invested
more than $21.4 million in its Michigan network.
By SEA
Southeast Michigan is a freight transportation
and distribution hub. Each year, the Port of
Detroit sees more than 17 million tons of
cargo at 29 private and public sector terminal
facilities, making it the largest seaport in
Michigan. Access from Oakland County is easy
and quick via I-75 and other major highways.
BY BUS
Oakland County is served by Suburban Mobility
Authority for Regional Transportation
(SMART), offering fixed route and connector
service throughout the region. SMART has
43 routes providing service to an average of
36,000 people per day.
BY HIGHWAY
Oakland County’s central location in Southeast
Michigan puts it in proximity to major
highways including I-75, I-96, I-94 and others.
