registered apprenticeships and training<br />
for workers, employers can secure talent<br />
consistent with their needs. Most programs<br />
are in the manufacturing, health care and<br />

Oakland Schools Career-Focused Education<br />
Curriculum at Oakland Schools Technical<br />
Campuses encompasses advanced training<br />
for high school juniors and seniors in nine<br />
clusters: biotechnology and environmental<br />
science, iTEAM (IT, entrepreneurship<br />
and advanced marketing), construction<br />
technology, cosmetology, culinary arts/<br />
hospitality, engineering/emerging<br />
technologies, health sciences, transportation<br />
technology and visual imaging technology.<br />
TRANSPORTATION<br />
Oakland County is a global hub for commerce.<br />
The county’s central location in Southeast<br />
Michigan means convenient air access to<br />
most North American consumer markets,<br />
shorter flight distances to international<br />
markets and a developed infrastructure that<br />
connects air and freight facilities with other<br />

Six major airports service Oakland County.<br />
Oakland County International Airport<br />
Located in Waterford, OCIA is Southeast<br />
Michigan’s premier corporate and general<br />
aviation airport. One of the busiest general<br />
aviation airports in the world, it’s home to<br />
over 500 aircraft and used by virtually every<br />
Fortune 500 company in the United States.<br />

Oakland/Troy Airport The county’s<br />
“executive” airport, Oakland/Troy is used<br />
by business travelers and tourists for private,<br />
corporate and charter flights. It provides<br />
airfreight, aircraft maintenance and fuel<br />
services.<br />
Oakland/Southwest Airport Located in New<br />
Hudson, the primary business district in Lyon<br />
Township, this airport services southwestern<br />
Oakland County residents and businesses.<br />
Bishop International Airport Located north of<br />
Oakland County in Flint, this full-service airport<br />
features nonstop flights to Atlanta, Baltimore/<br />
Washington, Chicago, Fort Myers, Las Vegas,<br />
Minneapolis, Orlando and Tampa.<br />
Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport<br />
A short distance by freeway, Detroit’s Metro<br />
Airport provides service from 13 scheduled<br />
passenger airlines offering more than 1,100<br />
flights a day to and from nearly 150 nonstop<br />
destinations on four continents. It’s also a<br />
key hub for Delta Airlines, which in partnership<br />
with its Delta Connection carriers offers<br />
services to 334 destinations in 64 countries<br />
on six continents.<br />
Willow Run Airport is just a few miles west<br />
of Detroit Metro Airport and serves cargo,<br />
corporate and general aviation clients. Its four<br />
runways, 24-hour FAA tower and U.S. Customs<br />
operations provide easy access for users.<br />
BY RAIL<br />
Amtrak provides train travel in Southeast<br />
Michigan, operating between multiple stations<br />
in Oakland County and offering service to<br />
East Lansing, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Port<br />
Huron, Chicago and beyond.<br />
CSX operates and maintains more than 1,200<br />
miles of track in Michigan, with a major rail yard<br />
and intermodal and TRANSFLO terminals<br />
in Detroit, as well as a TRANSFLO terminal in<br />
Oakland County’s Wixom. In 2014, CSX invested<br />
more than $21.4 million in its Michigan network.<br />
By SEA<br />
Southeast Michigan is a freight transportation<br />
and distribution hub. Each year, the Port of<br />
Detroit sees more than 17 million tons of<br />
cargo at 29 private and public sector terminal<br />
facilities, making it the largest seaport in<br />
Michigan. Access from Oakland County is easy<br />
and quick via I-75 and other major highways.<br />
BY BUS<br />
Oakland County is served by Suburban Mobility<br />
Authority for Regional Transportation<br />
(SMART), offering fixed route and connector<br />
service throughout the region. SMART has<br />
43 routes providing service to an average of<br />
36,000 people per day.<br />
BY HIGHWAY<br />
Oakland County’s central location in Southeast<br />
Michigan puts it in proximity to major<br />
highways including I-75, I-96, I-94 and others.<br />
