Case study Partnering to deliver better social housing
The Department of Housing and Public Works has
developed an innovative partnership arrangement
with Defence Housing Australia (DHA) to better meet
demand for social housing. Under the agreement,
the department provides land equity to fund
additional new social housing dwellings.
The department transfers land located in areas where
there are already a high number of social housing
dwellings to DHA, in exchange for the construction of
dwellings in other locations.
To date, there have been 17 one and two bedroom
apartments constructed through the partnership.
This delivery method has a range of benefits,
including the relocation of existing tenants to more
suitable accommodation and better utilisation of the
department’s land assets.
