Worshippers at St John’s
Cathedral in Portsmouth enjoyed
a day of devotion to the Holy
Queen when the parish held its
second annual Day with Mary.
The idea of a special day
dedicated to Mary first came into
being back in the 1980’s as a laydriven
apostolate, but the event is
now staged at churches all over
the country.
They are an opportunity to
respond to Our Lady’s request at
Fatima in June 1917, when she
said: “Jesus wishes to make use of
you to make me known and loved.
He wants to establish in the world
devotion to my Immaculate
Heart. I promise salvation to those
who embrace it, and those souls
will be loved by God like flowers
placed by me to adorn His
throne.”
The day at Portsmouth last
month began with a procession,
carrying a statue of Our Lady of
Fatima into the Cathedral, where
she was crowned by Canon
Dominic Golding, Cathedral Dean
and Vicar General.
In his homily at Mass, Canon
Golding invited the congregation
to be “like Mary, transmitters of
divine life”.
A day of devotions then
followed including the Rosary and
meditations given by Fr John Paul
Lyttle and Fr Serafino Lanzetta.
