The main objective of this course is to introduce to students the fundamentals<br />

in the design of structural elements using structural steel. The course contents<br />

include:<br />

Introduction to steel structures; history, components, production processes,<br />

durability, material properties, failure characteristics, construction;<br />

Introduction to Eurocode 3 EN 1993: Part 1-1, Part 1-5 and Part 1-8 along with<br />

the respective National Annexes; concepts of strength, local buckling, stability,<br />

limit states, partial safety factors, actions, section classification, examples.<br />

Restrained Beams: shear capacity, bending capacity at high shear, deflection,<br />

design examples; Beam Webs: stiff bearing length bearing capacity, buckling<br />

resistance, stiffener design, design examples; Unrestrained Beams: lateral<br />

torsional buckling (LTB), buckling resistance moment, effective length, design<br />

examples.<br />

Tension Members: tension capacity, allowance for holes, allowance for<br />

eccentricity, design examples; Compression Members and Beam-Column:<br />

classification, buckling resistance, new effective area approach for Class 4<br />

(slender) sections, effective length, multiple column curves, design examples.<br />

Design for Simple Construction: assumptions for simple multi-storey frames,<br />

moments due to nominal eccentricity, buckling length, design examples;<br />

Members with Combined Moments and Axial Forces: capacity and buckling<br />

checks, equivalent uniform moment factors, design examples.<br />

Bolted Connections: bolt spacing, end and edge distances, effect of bolt<br />

holes, bolts in tension, allowance for prying action, design examples; Welded<br />

Connections: weldability of steel materials, fillet welds, butt welds, design<br />

examples.<br />
