Digi One® IA Modem
Access industrial devices via standard
telephone lines
Features
• V.92 56K serial modem designed for industrial automation market
• DIN rail mounting
• RS-232 9-pin serial for universal connectivity
• 9 to 30 VDC (External supply required, not included)
The Digi One IA Modem makes it easy to remotely monitor, access, and troubleshoot
industrial equipment over standard telephone lines. It is a v.90 56K RS-232 external serial
modem specifically designed to handle the needs of the industrial automation industry.
Its thin DIN rail mount, 9-30V DC power with terminal block connectors and 0-60ºC operating
temperature facilitates an easy fit into any control cabinet where industrial devices, such as
PLCs, RTUs, flow meters or other controllers may exist.
This modem is designed for applications where remote access to industrial equipment via
standard telephone lines is required. For example, it could be used in SCADA (Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition) scenarios where one needs to monitor, control or receive
knowledge of alarms and events from a remote industrial device.
It is also valuable for remote troubleshooting. By plugging a Digi One IA Modem into a
remote industrial device, anyone authorized can dial directly into a remote location to
troubleshoot problems as they occur.
Double the range of your RS-232 data signal. Repeaters
may be daisy-chained for extra range. Many computers,
laptops, and some desktops ship with low-power ports that are
unable to drive port-powered devices or full-length RS-232
cabling. Repeaters amplify these weak signals up to the RS-232
standard. Model 232LB9R is a 9-pin version, boosting all eight
signal lines and carrying ground through. Model 232LB2 is a
25-pin version, boosting TD (Transmit Data), RD (Receive
Data), RTS (Request to Send), CTS (Clear to Send), CD (Carrier
Detect) and DTR (Data Terminal Ready).
Mario: Extend data signals with signal repeaters
The standards for RS-232 data communication call for a maximum range of 50 feet (15 m) and the
RS-422/485 standards call for 4,000 feet (1200 m) maximum. While these standard maximums can
sometimes be stretched, the more positive method of using serial communications over longer distances is
the installation of repeaters at intervals in the data line. Repeaters refresh the data signals by regenerating
the signal. Repeaters allow another 50 to 100 feet of range for RS-232 lines, and 4,000 feet for each repeater
added to an RS-422 or RS-485 line. RS-485 repeaters divide the load into multiple segments and each
“refreshed” signal is capable of driving another 4,000 feet of cable and 31 more RS-485 nodes. Models
485OP, 485OPDR, and 485OPDRi isolate and repeat RS-422 and RS-485 signals. See above & pages 16, 22.
