Treasures of Northumberland
The beautiful city of Durham, with its Cathedral and Castle World Heritage
Site, is the jewel in the crown of an extraordinary county. Come away with us
and discover what the magical North East corner of England has to offer.
Day 1 We depart our local pick up area
and travel to Newark on Trent. It is a market
town steeped in history with a dramatic castle.
There are a large selection of independent
retailers and high street stores offering an
eclectic mix of goods and services. Many
of the shops face onto the historic market
place. After time for lunch we continue our
journey to our hotel where we stay for the next
4 nights.
Day 2 Today we visit Beamish Open Air
Museum, a living, working experience of life
as it was in the great north in Georgian,
Victorian and Edwardian times. Travel on the
restored tramway to visit Pockerley Old Hall,
The Town, Rowley Station, The Fairground,
Home Farm and The Pit Village.
Day 3 After breakfast we travel in to Durham,
the quintessential old English University City.
Durham Cathedral holds the remains of St.
Cuthbert and the tomb of Bede and together
with Durham Castle (one of England’s largest
surviving Norman Castles) is now a World
Heritage Site. In the afternoon we enjoy a
delicious afternoon cream tea at the four-star
country house hotel, Wynyard Hall.
Day 4 Today we visit the Holy Island
(Lindisfarne), the fabled offshore Island only
accessible at low tide via a narrow causeway.
Stroll around the village and take in the
fabulous views, visit romantic Lindisfarne
Castle and the ancient priory ruin with its
‘rainbow arch’ (all entry fees payable locally).
During the day we will also visit Bamburgh,
home of famous lighthouse keepers daughter,
Grace Darling before returning to our hotel in
time for dinner.
