Rhine Valley & the
Festival of Lights
For many years, towns along the Rhine and Moselle rivers celebrate their
annual wine festivals in the autumn. The harvest is over and it’s time to
try the fermented, freshly pressed white and red grape juice, called
Federweisser, which is traditionally matched with Zwiebelkuchen, a delicious
type of onion tart. Indisputable highlights are the fireworks at night tied to
the Rhine in Flames festivities. Join in the celebrations on land to discover
the heart & soul of this special region of Germany.
Day 1 After our local pick-ups we travel to
Folkestone for the Eurotunnel crossing to
Calais. We then proceed to our hotel with
comfort stops on route.
Day 2 Today we will enjoy a leisurely cruise
from Boppard along the Rhine to the ancient
Roman town of Koblenz, positioned at the
junction between the Moselle and Rhine rivers.
Castles, palaces, fortresses and towers are ours
to explore (local charges may apply) before we
embark on our return river cruise to Boppard
later this afternoon.
Day 3 Today you have a free day to explore
the Roman town of Boppard, with its
excellent promenade and panoramic views
of the river on one side and the Hunsrück
hills on the other. You can discover the
Roman Fort, the 12th Century St. Severus
Church, the 14th Century Carmelite Church,
the baroque Church of St. Pankratius, the
Provestry in Hirzenach and, in the town centre,
the Electoral Castle of Boppard. In the evening
you can enjoy the highlight of your holiday
on the Rhine River. We depart at 5:30 p.m for
a boat cruise on the Rhine River from Boppard
upstream sailing past numerous castles on the
Rhine river. From approximately 8.30pm, the
house fronts of St. Goar and St. Goarshausen
and the medieval castles will be beautifully
illuminated. Light rings will spread across
the Rhine river and the castles Katz and
Rheinfels and the Rhine river hills will be
illuminates. Four firework displays will take
place from Castle Katz, the harbor in St. Goar,
the castle Rheinfels and from a ferry in
the middle of the Rhine, lighting up the valley
in a spectacular display. Whilst on board
we enjoy a 1 course evening meal and from
6pm onwards there will be DJ music and
dance on deck 2 for the young at heart (not
so loud music of the 70s, 80s, 90s and hits of
the last years). We return to Boppard on the
Rhine River about 11:25 p.m.
Day 4 Today we enjoy a scenic drive though
one of Germany’s most picturesque river
valleys. We follow the twists and turns of the
Moselle as we make our way towards the
oldest German city, Trier. Here, you will have
time to discover the Roman gate, Porta Nigra,
and the 4th Century Roman Basilica, believed
to have been the Emperor Constantine’s
throne room. You may also choose to visit the
Roman Imperial Baths, the cathedral or the
Trier Archaeological Museum during your time
here (local charges will apply).
Day 5 After breakfast we make our way back
to Calais for our Eurotunnel crossing with
comfort stops along the way.
