Free Cakes for Kids is a community service to families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. A birthday cake is baked by local volunteers with the child’s favourite theme (where possible). The cake is then delivered to the family. This service covers Thetford, Bury st Edmunds and the area immediately surrounding, although is at the group’s discretion where they will and won’t cover so get in touch if unsure. FCFK has over 80 organisations running though the UK with 1000’s of cakes being delivered every year. Who is eligible? Any child who would not otherwise receive a birthday cake is eligible. This may be due to financial reasons, but could also be due to circumstances (e.g. young carers, illness etc.). Families can refer themselves to receive a cake, however we do prefer to work direct family organizations such as Home start or other agencies. How can I help? There are lots of way to help. By becoming a volunteer baker you can help us achieve our goal of putting a smile on as many children’s (and parents) faces as possible. You don’t need to be an expert baker just have the basic knowledge and want to help. Becoming a volunteer baker is flexible; you can fit it round your commitments and bake when you have the time. There is no pressure to bake. For other ways to help please ask. What will the cake be like and how will it be delivered? All our cakes are different, we like to personalise them based on the child’s interests. The cake will be delivered by a local volunteer direct to the family or to the organisation supporting the family. Why do we do it? We do it because we care. There are a lot of families out there that are currently in a situation that prevents them from providing a Birthday cake for their child. We currently have 21 fantastic bakers who have made more than 50 cakes over the past 2 years. The cakes come in all different shapes and sizes from football shirts, Frozen & Batman to a pretty pink cake covered in butterflies, Ironman & Harry Potter to just name a few. FCFK do not receive any funding however donations are greatly received to help our bakers deliver such wonderful gifts.
