JANUARY 2017 JANUARY | ISSUE 2017 #51 | MUSIC ISSUE #51 & ENTERTAINMENT
THEATRE
ROYAL
Early January sees the final 2
weeks of our pantomime Beauty
and the Beast, the show opened
in early December and received
some fantastic reviews and
achieved 4 stars from The Stage.
It was also well attended with over 1000
audience members coming along during its
opening weekend alone. To date 19,000 tickets
have been sold during the run, if you haven’t
been able to join in the fun and mayhem yet
then never fear, Beauty and the Beast continues
until Sunday 15 January.
Once panto closes we have some wonderful
winter warmers to keep you entertained
during the cold month of January. On
Saturday 21 January we welcome the hilarious
Showstoppers. If you haven’t seen them
before they are a touring troupe who create an
improvised musical based on suggestions given
to them from the audience on the evening. The
company boast an array of awards and no two
shows are ever the same. It could be Rocky
Horror meets Miss Saigon or Cats crossed with
Chicago, with the Showstoppers you never
quite know what you are going to get, the only
guarantee is plenty of laughs!
Following on from that we host the latest in
our Lunchtime Concert series on Monday 23
January, we welcome Saxology. They are a
Saxophone Quartet who perform a programme
of Baroque and Classical arrangements, French
Neo Romantic, English Pastoral, American
Jazz and a premiere too, led by composer and
arranger, Jeffery Wilson. Each concert is followed
by complimentary cakes, coffee and tea in the
Greene Room and is sponsored by Gross and Co
Solicitors.
January is completed by the visit of Bury
Theatre Workshop with their stage adaptation of
Tolstoy’s classic novel Anna Karenina. The local
community group perform between Tuesday
24 and Saturday 28 January. The show explores
the themes of personal responsibly, fate and
powerlessness.
Looking into February Theatre Royal Bury
St Edmunds presents Northanger Abbey,
adapted by the acclaimed Austen specialist Tim
Luscombe, this show opens in Bury St Edmunds
and then embarks on National Tour. You can
see the performance between Thursday 2 and
Saturday 11 February.
2016 is now behind us and it was a fantastic year
at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds with many
brilliant shows. Our line-up for January and early
February sets the bar pretty high for the rest
of the year, I wonder what the rest of 2017 may
have in store for the theatre? I have no doubt that
there will be plenty more fantastic shows and
many enjoyable evenings. It would be lovely if
you could join us.
