THE LAST WORD
by Barbara Negron
Let’s start something new:)
Nope, it’s not a New Year’s Resolution. I don’t believe in
them. To me it’s like saying “I’m going to start a diet on
Monday,” then on Tuesday, you’re over it. It’s the same with
the resolutions. They are promises you make to yourself, that you
don’t keep, and end up feeling bad about yourself. I tell you, it’s a
vicious circle, a mean trick, a Debbie Downer way of thinking.
So let’s start something new. I’m going to use healthy eating as
an example here, but you can apply it to anything. For me, food is
my addiction. I love to eat, cook, bake, and eat some more. I love
to cook big meals for family and friends. If I had my way, my home
would be one of those clandestine eating places that you have to
go on Facebook to make a reservation for. True story: One year
my son surprised his wife by taking her to one of those homes in
Atlanta. The menu is set, no substitutions, you pay up front. They
loved it.
But I digress, back to the new start. I need to eat better. I refuse to
diet anymore. At my age, I don’t want to be told to measure, weigh,
count points, etc. I just want to feel good. First, I know carbs and
me are not friends. Sugar is a false friend too. The two together are
back-stabbing lunatics who want me to be hurt all the time. That is
step one: Recognize the issue. Figure out what your personal flaw
is, own it. Fire it.
I know it sounds simplistic, but positive thinking does more for spirit
and health than you can imagine. That is step two: Be positive
about your endeavor, whatever it may be. Motivational guru Tony
Robbins said “Identify your problems, but give your power and
energy to solutions.” What a truth.
I am not giving a set time to eat
healthier. That is a death sentence for
my goal. The goal is to just do it daily.
Eventually the good habits will take
over the old. If you want to change
your life, change your mind. So forget
the New Year’s resolutions, make daily
ones instead. After all each day is new. P
