MEDICAL How to Cope with Post Holiday Blues by Dr. Christopher Saffici You’ve opened all the presents, recovered from too much food, and uploaded your holiday pictures to Facebook. Now that the trimmings are gone and parties are over, are you feeling down? It might come as no surprise that seasonal blues often reach their peak once the festivities have ended. “As fun as they can be, the stress and expectations with the holidays can overwhelm us and switch our brains into overdrive,” said Deena Golding, a psychologist based in Boca Raton. Think about it: days and weeks of socializing, cooking, gift shopping, traveling, and tying up loose ends at work – all of which amplify stress and leave little room for self-care like exercise or meditation. Luckily, it doesn’t have to be that way. We’ve rounded up the best tips for kicking the post holiday blues so you can get through the rest of winter happily. Expect some letdown. Expecting to feel a little low is a way of telling yourself that this is a normal feeling and that it will soon pass once the routine re-establishes itself. Don’t fast forward past holiday cheer. A huge part of keeping our spirits up after the holidays relies on tweaking our attitude toward the positive. Instead of collapsing under the weight of obligation, remember the good experiences you had during the holidays says Mildred Berry, Education Professor at Florida Memorial University. Try your hand at reviving the lost art of writing thank you notes, not emails or texts. Choose the benefits of a blank January calendar. Any break in your routine is good for your health, providing you with the chance to rejuvenate. Take it easy when you are settling back into your usual routine. Your more rested self is a good thing and gives you the opportunity to take a renewed perspective on your work, routine, study or home life pace. Look forward to something. Revive feeling anticipation by arranging fun activities, such as having dinner with friends, starting a new hobby or interest, going to sporting event, or going to the movies. Choose activities that meet your budget and interests. Make healthy choices. The holiday season is not good for the waist line and can leave you feeling a little out of shape in the nutrition department. Aim to return to eating healthy food and ensuring you get the right amount of exercise. Expect to enjoy the year ahead. Think ahead to the changing seasons and the sorts of things you’d like to do as the year moves on. Doing something about the things you’d like to happen is the first step. With the holidays over and life in full swing, many of us might experience dips in mood, motivation, and energy. Getting back on track takes a few weeks, so take it easy as you transition back to a normal routine. Avoid overly high expectations, schedule fun outings to look forward to,and don’t forget to relax and be grateful. He lives in Boca Raton and is a life coach in the South Florida area. 22 JANUARY 2017
