Our Kids Deserve a Shot - And Our Taxpayers Do, Too! By: Victoria Seaman / Victoria’s Corner While at the legislature, I voted in favor of establishing Education Savings Accounts and Opportunity Scholarships. I believe these two programs represent the most profound innovation in public policy undertaken in Nevada in the last two decades. While many seniors may not have family or loved ones in school, their tax dollars nonetheless go to support a system that is failing children. Simply put, seniors are being asked to invest in a failing system that artificially limits families’ choices. That’s part of the reason I pushed so strongly for ESAs while in the legislature. The money taxed from seniors deserves to be spent in a way that actually improves educational outcomes. These programs introduce the most positive elements of market competition and consumer choice in our education system; providing families with eligible children up to $5,700 to help educate them outside the public school system. These funds can be used in a variety of ways - from special tutoring for home schooled students, to covering the cost of private school tuition. Opportunity Scholarships were designed to help cover the gap that oftentimes exists between the money from the state and the cost of tuition. Students need an “outside the box” approach to education, and taxpayers deserve a meaningful return on their investment. One in three students in Nevada won’t graduate high school. The ESA program is one solution to several problems. Because the program doesn’t take the total amount allocated to a school to educate a student, when families enroll in the program, they take a young person and the state money attached to that student, but leave behind local and other funds that were intended for that student. This means public schools that have many ESA applicants will have more money to educate fewer students. It is a solution for both the student enrolling in the program and leaving a public school and for that child’s school, where teachers now have more resources to spread across fewer students and drives a return on investment for Nevada’s taxpayers. By: Dan Hyde / Call to Action Much to my chagrin, I have over 40 years experience promoting, electing, and effectively navigating through the political minefield and processes of elected governing bodies. I can assure you that working through the political process is a true test of a person’s patience. It is riddled with many levels of incompetence; though, once you understand how it works, can garner great rewards. I have also served on numerous commissions, advisory and ad hoc committees which has resulted in developing and implementing these helpful policies that have had positive impacts in our senior communities. In a word, I know the process! Why that is important is because if you are not involved in the process, the process will run you over. Your voice will not be heard and the politicians will create policies that adversely impact you and your loved ones. 26 A Politician or a Leader? March 2017 The best example of this is the disgusting Guardianship laws that are in effect in our state! The laws, enacted by your elected political officials are a disgrace. Permit me to clearly define the difference between a politician and a leader, there really is a difference. A politician is a “Lip Service Specialist” (LSS) - someone who says all the “right” things to get your vote and then develops a severe case of amnesia after being elected. A leader, on the other hand, is a valued, trustworthy public servant who seriously holds your best interests at heart and looks forward to meeting and hearing from you. My task is to keep you informed as to who the leaders are, avoid the LSS’s and provide you a means to effectively navigate through the political process – Learn how to get your voice heard and have a direct impact on policy decisions!
