INSPIRATION
IN ACTION
After Jon and Clare moved into their
new home in Cambridge, they wanted
to maximise the space available without
extending. They brought in Max from
Design Republic to help.
The home was a new build c.2000 and
was a typical new-build with old Trade-Hut
kitchen and utility room. The layout left
no room for a breakfast table or enough
tall units. There was also a separate dining
room which Jon and Clare felt was not
something they would use very often.
Max began by opening the whole space
to bring the dining area into the kitchen
space. Max says: “The dining room suited
the open-plan layout and would be used
every day. With a couple of steel supports,
this would be very easy to achieve.”
After
The clients wanted the new kitchen to
retain a slightly country feel but not at a
premium cost, so Max used painted shaker
lay-on doors and end panels. The worktops
were a Polar White Quartz. The white
tones were offset by the warmth of the
oak flooring. For what would be created,
Jon and Clare were happy to lose the
separate utility room as long as they had
space to hide the washing machine and
tumble dryer. Max created some tall units
where the utility room was and stacked
them behind matching furniture which also
included larder storage.
The medium height units work really well
within the design. It offers a great ‘cooking
centre’ with multifunction oven, compact
oven with microwave, integrated coffee
machine and pull-out larder.
“We are over the moon with the design.
The layout works so much better for us
on a daily basis and we never thought we
would be able to get so much into this
space when we bought it. Looking back,
getting Max in to help was the best thing
to do rather than trying to do it ourselves.”
