• Keep tools, ladders and garbage pails locked away<br />
• Keep bicycles, barbecues and lawn equipment securely stored<br />
• Don’t leave spare keys hidden outside — <strong>the</strong>y can be found<br />
<strong>Home</strong> Safety<br />
Inside Your <strong>Home</strong><br />
• On a regular basis, test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors by<br />
pushing <strong>the</strong> test button. If operating correctly <strong>the</strong> alarm will sound<br />
briefl y. Never disconnect <strong>the</strong> smoke or carbon monoxide detectors.<br />
Vacuum or brush <strong>the</strong> detectors on a monthly basis to keep dirt out<br />
of <strong>the</strong>m. Do not use cleaning solutions<br />
• In <strong>the</strong> case of fi re, close <strong>the</strong> doors/windows to <strong>the</strong> area, leave <strong>the</strong><br />
area, contact <strong>the</strong> fi re department (911) and wait for <strong>the</strong> fi re department<br />
outside of your house. If you can, have someone meet <strong>the</strong><br />
fi re department at a main intersection and provide guidance<br />
• If you are unable to leave your home due to fi re or heavy smoke,<br />
go to a secure room and seal all cracks where smoke may enter with<br />
wet towels, sheets, clothing or duct tape. Dial 911 and signal fi re fi ghters<br />
by waving a sheet from <strong>the</strong> window (close window if smoke enters<br />
through it). Remain calm and wait to be rescued. Do not exit until<br />
<strong>the</strong> Fire Offi cial has declared <strong>the</strong> situation safe<br />
• Do not store dangerous chemicals in your house. If you must keep<br />
dangerous chemicals in your home, visit <strong>the</strong> manufacturer’s website<br />
and review <strong>the</strong> Material Safety Data Sheets to ensure <strong>the</strong> chemicals<br />
are stored and used safely<br />
• Store cleaning products in high, child-proof locked cabinets,<br />
to protect against climbing youngsters<br />
• Keep prescription drugs in child resistant containers<br />
• Lower your heat when gone for an extended period of time<br />
• Ensure that all <strong>the</strong> occupants of your home, including children,<br />
are familiar with your civic address and how to contact emergency<br />
services (911)<br />
Outside Your <strong>Home</strong><br />
• If your new home is still in a construction area, ensure children do not<br />
play in <strong>the</strong> streets or in houses under construction. No one is permitted<br />
to enter a house under construction without written permission from<br />
<strong>Minto</strong> Communities Inc.<br />
