architects to catch up as the pressures
there aren't so great, but any construction
in an urban environment - London or
Manchester, for instance - will come under
stricter rules and regulations about how
the building model will be delivered, and
how it will address local environmental
and infrastructure concerns. It will need to
come fully topped up with the sort of
information that is not only geared towards
making efficiencies during its design and
construction, but which can be addressed
many years into the future by local
planning authorities.
To raise awareness of the many, often
complex issues involved we are holding a
CAD User COBie Seminar this May in
association with Vectorworks. The subject
matter and the points that will be
discussed don't just apply to
architects and building contractors
however - they will affect everyone from
landscape modellers and town planners
right through to construction teams and
asset managers.
The COBie Seminar will look at the role of
information in the building model; what it
is, how it is attached to the model and
what does, or indeed does not need to be
included for other users of the model. That
will be followed by presentations outlining
different methods of delivering that
information to other users, in the form of a
federated model that combines models
from all of the disciplines involved with the
design and construction of the building.
This can then be viewed on any number
of devices, or as COBie data, promoted
by the UK Government, which addresses
a number of critical needs - in particular
providing asset managers with an easily
digested inventory of all of the
components of a building with associated
files to facilitate its maintenance. Each
method of delivery has its pros and cons.
The seminar is taking place at the
London Transport Museum, and we have
the happy situation where one of our
speakers on the day will be Andy Stanton,
Infrastructure and Sustainability Manager
at Transport for London. You can find
more details of all of the seminar
speakerson the seminar website at the
end of this article.
COBie or not COBie: that's a convenient
tag to grab your attention. The real
purpose of the event is to get you thinking
more seriously about the role of
information in society. The seminar's
afternoon's session will begin with a look
at the future of information within the
industry - or more specifically, within our
lives - and the issues that address long
term ownership and retention of up to date
building information. Attendees will then
have their opportunity to question the
experts in an open forum.
Companies will soon need to make
some important decisions about how they
handle their data - either as developers or
users - and the CAD User COBie Seminar
will give them an opportunity to clarify their
BIM and COBie knowledge and thereby
make some informed decisions about
their role in the future.
At the outset of this article I said that we
are heading towards a seismic change in
the way we handle information. Why not
come along to the seminar and see if you
can challenge that statement!
