MedAustron in Wiener Neustadt (NÖ) ist eines der modernsten Zentren für Ionentherapie und Forschung. Patientinnen und Patienten

centres for ion beam therapy and research. Patients benefit from an innovative form of radiation therapy.
Bei der Ionentherapie erfolgt die Bestrahlung
mittels geladener Teilchen. Diese Therapiemethode
verdanken wir der Teilchenphysik: die besonderen
Eigenschaften dieser Teilchen ermöglichen
es, die Strahlendosis präzise im Tumor zu
platzieren und dadurch das umliegende Gewebe
besser zu schonen. Das macht diese Methode optimal
zur Behandlung von Tumoren in der Nähe
von strahlungsempfindlichen Organen. Außerdem
können die Nebenwirkungen und Langzeitschäden
der Strahlentherapie reduziert werden.
Komplexe Technik
Um diese Form der Bestrahlung zu ermöglichen,
ist ein komplexer Teilchenbeschleuniger nötig,
der bei MedAustron in enger Zusammenarbeit
mit dem Europäischen Kernforschungszentrum
CERN entwickelt wurde. Ein sogenanntes Synchrotron
beschleunigt die geladenen Teilchen
auf bis zu zwei Drittel der Lichtgeschwindigkeit,

bevor diese in die Bestrahlungsräume und dort
millimetergenau auf den Tumor gelenkt werden.
Therapie und Forschung
Mit der Ionentherapie steht den Medizinern eine zusätzliche
Option in der Krebstherapie zur Verfügung,
die neue Perspektiven für bisher schwer behandelbare
Tumore eröffnet. Seit Ende 2016 werden bei
MedAustron Patientinnen und Patienten mit dieser
innovativen Therapie behandelt. Das Zentrum wird
nun sukzessive ausgebaut und wird im Vollbetrieb
etwa 1.000 Patienten jährlich behandeln können. Neben
der Therapie wird die österreichweit einzigartige
Anlage auch für Forschung genutzt, um im Interesse
der Patienten die Therapie stetig weiterzuentwickeln.

Ion beam therapy uses charged particles for irradiation.
This form of treatment is based on particle
physics: the special physical properties of ions allow
to focus the maximum radiation dose exactly
to the area of the tumor while mostly sparing the
healthy tissue. Thus, this form of therapy is optimal
for treating tumors close to radiation sensitive
organs. Side effects and long-term effects can be
significantly reduced.
Complex Technology
To facilitate such a kind of irradiation, a complex
particle accelerator is necessary – the one at Med-
Austron was developed in close cooperation with
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear
Research. A so-called synchrotron accelerates the

charged particles up to two thirds of the speed of
light before they are directed in the treatment
rooms, where they emit their radiation directly to
the tumor volume down to the millimeter.
Therapy and Research
Ion beam therapy offers an additional option for
cancer therapy and provides new prospects for
tumors that have been difficult to treat so far. Patients
are treated with this innovative method at
MedAustron since late 2016. The center will now
be expanded step by step, offering a capacity of up
to 1,000 patients per year in full operation. Additionally,
MedAustron offers the possibility to conduct
translational research in order to continously
improve the treatment method.

diesem Grund freut es mich sehr,
dass in dieser Ausgabe unser Bundesland
Niederösterreich eine bedeutende
Rolle spielt und der Berichterstattung
über unser Land
sehr viel Platz eingeräumt wird.
Es freut mich aber auch deshalb
sehr, weil damit unsere Vorzüge
und Stärken, wie etwa unsere
dynamische Wirtschaft, unsere
innovative Wissenschaftslandschaft
oder auch unsere international
anerkannte Kulturszenerie,
weit über die Grenzen unseres
Landes hinausgetragen werden.
Als Landeshauptfrau von Niederösterreich
bedanke ich mich
dafür sehr herzlich bei allen Verantwortungsträgern
des Magazins
und wünsche allen Leserinnen
