and Hoi An. It’s a cluster of five
marble and limestone hills, jutting
out conspicuously against the
surrounding plains. It makes for a
pleasantly easy hike, dotted with
Buddhist sanctuaries in hidden
grottoes, various pagodas on the
way, and panoramic viewing points
at the hilltops.
Riding into the town of Hoi
An, for once, our motorbikes
were rendered useless because
the central Ancient Town barred
entrance of any automobiles. It
speaks to the extraordinary steps
the Vietnamese people take to slow
time and stall erosions of modern
businesses, making it well worth
the UNESCO World Heritage Site
title for almost two decades.
The principal port of the
ancient Cham Kingdom, and a
major international trading centre
in the 16th and 17th centuries,
Hoi An played host to merchants
from China, Japan, France and the
Netherlands. The layered look of

แล้วจิ้มน้ำจิ้มถั่วสไตล์เวียดนาม แค่คำแรกก็
เกือบสั่งเพิ่มอีกชุดแทบไม่ทัน
เราไปต่อที่สะพานมังกร สัญลักษณ์แห่ง
ความมั่งคั่งที่สามารถมองเห็นศาลากลาง
ของดานังและตึกระฟ้าทางทิศเหนือท่ามกลาง
เมืองที่กำลังเติบโต แค่ไม่กี่ก้าวเดิน คุณสามารถ
หาเครื่องดื่มราคาย่อมเยาได้แถวริมแม่น้ำหาน
เราเลือกผับโกลเด้นไพน์ที่เต็มไปด้วยทั้งชาวเมือง
ดานังและนักท่องเที่ยวจากทั่วโลก ถ้ายังไม่จุใจ
ลองหาหมี่กว่านเส้นก๋วยเตี๋ยวในน้ำซุปพร้อม
กับหมู (กุ้งหรือไก่) ไข่ต้ม ถั่วลิสง ขนมข้าวกรอบ
สมุนไพร และผักเครื ่องเคียงเต็มอัตรา ทาน

รุ่งขึ้น หลังจากทานเฝอเป็นอาหารเช้า เรา
ขี่มอเตอร์ไซค์เลียบชายฝั่ง 45 นาทีเพื่อไปยัง
ฮอยอัน เมืองเต็มไปด้วยมนต์เสน่ห์ที่ทุกคนต้อง

มาเยือน ระหว่างทางเราได้แวะชมภูเขาหินอ่อนที่
ประกอบด้วยเนินเขาหินอ่อนและหินปูนห้าลูกตั้ง
ตระหง่านบนที่ราบ ภายในเต็มไปด้วยถ้ำและซอก
หินที่ประดิษฐานพระพุทธรูปและเจดีย์หลากหลาย
รูปแบบ จากนั้นดื่มด่ำไปกับวิวจากยอดเขา
เพื่อเหตุผลทางด้านการอนุรักษ์ รถทุกชนิด
ไม่ได้รับอนุญาตให้เข้าไปยังเมืองโบราณฮอยอัน

ฮอยอันเป็นเมืองท่าหลักของอาณาจักร

ปัจจุบันอาคารส่วนใหญ่จะไม่ได้เป็นร้านรวง
ดั้งเดิมอีกต่อไปเนื่องจากถูกปรับเปลี่ยนเป็น
ร้านอาหาร คาเฟ่ ร้านตัดเย็บเสื้อผ้า ร้านเครื่อง
หนัง และอื่นๆ แต่ชาวเมืองต่างก็ยังทำงานอยู่ใน
เมืองเก่า จึงมีร้านอาหารเปิดให้บริการตาม
ถนนและริมแม่น้ำมากมาย ขอแนะนำให้ลิ้มรส

เหนื่อยแล้วหาโอกาสเดินเที่ยวชมทุ่งนา ดูชาวนา

the town, exceptionally preserved
till today, shows the confluence
of cultural influences. And Hoi An
thus aptly translates as “peaceful
meeting place”.
Under auburn clay roof
tiles, you can find elegantly
articulated open beam systems,
and intricately carved Chinesestyle
wood panels. Everywhere you
look, the golden-poppy-coloured
walls abound, with lush vegetation
growing from all possible crevices
and in all directions. Inside
the marvellous architecture,
disappointingly, few shops of
substance exist today. Most spaces
have been transformed into
restaurants, posh cafés, tailors and
leather goods shops. Fret not, as
locals continue to live and work
in and around the Old Town, so
the wet market on the riverside
and scattered street food stalls are
still worth the visit. Try grabbing
a Vietnamese sandwich by Madam
Khanh, the fabled Bánh Mì Queen,
then pack a box of fresh-cut fruits
from Central Market, and head for
the less touristy An Bang beach,
where the quiet beauty of Hoi An
will finally settle in, just like the
gentle waves in front of you.
By the end of my trip, no longer
was I fearful on the motorbike, I
became a convert of this go-getter
vehicle. I took out the camera
to capture my last moments in
the city, when our motorbike
nimbly dodged traffic, on our way
back to the airport. It’s not an
exaggeration that the city works,
eats and dreams on motorbikes;
I can’t think of a better way to
experience it than on one of these
two-wheeled chariots.
