park, it appeared that a zoo would be located there, and a crocodile was sent from Florida by A.D. Sheean, then a state senator from Anamosa. A wolf, found running loose in Dubuque, was captured by that city's firemen and was also sent to the park to go with an assortment of reptiles and wildlife. However, a full blown zoo never materialized. The denouement of the transplanted crocodile was not recorded. Captured World War I German cannons were placed in the park in 1926. These were donated to the state by the U.S. War Department. This artillery was to serve as memorials to Iowa's deceased servicemen. Ironically. the cannons were salvaged for the metal drive staged in World War II. Enthusiastic state and local officials announced plans to construct ‘one of the largest and finest outdoor swimming pools in Iowa‘, during the autumn of 1926. A dam was constructed on Dutch Creek near Horse Thief Cave and. after many trials and errors, the pool was officially opened in June 1928. The pool was 264 ft. long by 108 ft. wide and ranged from a depth of eight feet to a few inches. The sides of the pool were cemented but efforts to cement the bottom were not successful. The pool was fed through a series of fountains from the spring-fed creek and low water from the 1931-32 drought, failed to supply the pool. Attempts to drill a well to furnish the pool failed and the state closed the pool in 1934, citing health reasons. For several years. various appeals were made to the the state to improve and reopen the swimming pool. Some persons claimed that the river, used as a substitute, was just as unsanitary and much more dangerous, but to no avail. Indian Dam still stands as a reminder of the swimming pool and is a popular attraction for visitors from near and far. The country club and nine-hole golf course, which had originally been set aside from the deed to the state. was also given to the state. due to the many years of statewide controversy over reformatory prisoners working on private property. Club officials. in turn, were given a 50-year lease, with no monies involved, which was renewed in 1977 for another 50 years. The expenses for the club house and golf course are paid for by membership fees and volunteers. No state funds are allocated. In 1940, the state purchased the last 17 acres of the 152-acre site. The addition extended from the upper road east, to the old highway 151 going to Fairview. The ford on Dutch Creek. locally known as the Upside-Down Bridge, was resurfaced at a cost of $26,000 in 1978. This is a favorite site for waders, as well as those who use it as a car-wash. a practice that has continued since the first Model T. The Wapsi Park, which was donated with the forethought of Anamosa citizens those many years ago, has over 300,000 visitors a year, according to Mike Brewer. park officer. Jones County Courthouse The Jones County Courthouse at Anamosa is located on a two-block tract of land which was formerly the city park, given to the county by the city of Anamosa. It was dedicated and first occupied in 1937, after having been located for some 66 years in a part of the Shaw block at the intersection of Main and Huber streets in Anamosa. It stands today as a beautiful and efficient structure in a perfect setting. One might say, perhaps in oversimplified form. that it was born of the growing realization that the ‘old' courthouse was increasingly unusable, and the mellowing of the rivalry between the communities of Monticello and Anamosa. and the advent of the Public Works Administration. This article is in two parts. one concerning the building and dedication of the courthouse, and the other relating to Old Court House Building, Shaw's Block, housed the jury room. court room. school superintendent. engineer, clerk, recorder, auditor, treasurer. stairs and vault. compiled by J.E. Heiserman the period prior to its construction. The story of the present courthouse is chronicled in the minutes of the county supervisors‘ meetings, and in the county papers of the day. It begins on June 21, 1935, when an application to the United States of America for a grant of a.id to assist in the financing of the construction. The application was later approved by Public Works Administration in the amount of $74,250. The county supervisors then were Gerd Harms, E.M. Russell, Henry Shinneda, H. J . Mayberry and N.C. Holst, Chairman. Later, and during the twoyear construction period, Herman Helgens and William J . Bailey became members ofthe board. With the application for financial assistance approved, on August 7, 1935, the Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution calling for a county-wide special election to be held on September 10, 1935. The propositions to be submitted to the electorate were: (1) Shall the County of Jones erect a courthouse at an estimated cost of $71,000 obtained through a federal grant, and $93,000 in bonds, for a total of $165,000. (2) Shall the county levy a tax of not exceeding “/4 mills for payment of principal and interest on the bonds. The proposition submitted to the voters was approved by a substantial margin. The vote at the election was 3,366 for, and 1,023 against. in Anamosa the vote was 1282 for, and 33 against: in Monticello. the vote was 204 for and 323 against. The architectural firm of Dougher, Rich and Woodburn, in Des Moines, was retained for the preparation of plans and specifications, which were completed after many meetings with the Board of Supervisors and inspection of various other courthouses of recent vintage in the state. Hearing on the plans and specifications was held April 15, 1936,
