some behavior problems, and the board adopted the
following resolution June 6, 1905: " Resolved, that the
Board of Education is opposed to athletics in the school
and in the name of the school, until such time as the
athletes show by their conduct that they will be a credit
to the school."
A delegation of students appeared at the Sept. 18,
1905. board meeting requesting permission to play
football, but the request was denied.
Conceivably related to the football matter, 19 high
school boys skipped school Sept. 24, 1905, and were
apprehended at the Anamosa fairgrounds. All were
suspended by the superintendent and were re-admitted
by the board after giving a public apology and agreeing
to obey to the letter a rule adopted by the board on
October 4.
The rule, which forbade the use of tobacco or liquor,
from the time the students left home for school, until
they returned home, and forbade the carrying of
tobacco, cigars, pipes. or liquor, probably gives us some
idea of the boys‘ activities at the fairgrounds.
The school board's anti-activity feelings continued
with a January, 1906. resolution forbidding student
participation in the district or state declamatory
contests.
The classical curriculum remained in vogue in the
early 1900s. Twelve students graduated in 1904 from
the Latin Course and eight graduated from the English
Course.
According to the secretary's annual report, 13
classrooms were in use during 1904-05 school year.
That year the superintendent received $1.200 per year
and the 15 female teachers averaged $44.33 per month.
The student attendance was 560.
Superintendent Frank C. Popham was hired in 1906
and remained until 1909. He proposed to the board that
