Health Care Comes of Age
Anamosa Hospitals

The site where Mercy Hospital was later built was
first occupied by a structure. built in 1892 under the
direction of the Rev. Robert Powers. to be used as a
Mother House of the Sisters of St. Francis. Lack of
operating funds. soon caused its closing.
April 6. 1893. Archbishop Henessey. of Dubuque.
granted a permit to Dr. D. W. Gawley. as administrator.
The facility was called ‘Dr. Gawley's Draco Sanitarium.
It was also known later. as the Prospect Park
Sanitarium.
