knowledge and in a small vessel. The bridge is the only
way that Francis Peninsula is connected to Sechelt
Peninsula.
4. Francis Bay – Some anchorage and shelter from southeast
winds in the north cove. Francis Point south is
marked by a light.
5. Martin Cove – Private residences overlook the small
cove. Limited anchorage with shelter from southeast
winds. A favourite spot for divers because of the rock
walls and sandy bottoms. Charles Island is north and
Martin Island is west.
6. Main entrance to Pender Harbour (public) is between
Henry Point and Williams Island which is marked with
a light. Pender Harbour is a resort area and provides
great sheltered anchorage. Many pubs, marinas, private
floats and mooring buoys are found throughout
the harbour.
7. There is a marked drying reef with a starboard hand
day marker between Williams Island and Charles Island.
Careful when navigating here.
8. Skardon Islands – Comprised of one large island and
three small islands. To the north are five bays. Joe
Bay has a float. Bill Bay and Dingman Bay have private
floats and moorings and Duncan Cove has a boat
launch with private floats and moorings; the fifth is
Ferrington Cove.
9. Hospital Bay – Three public floats; transient boats can
stay at floats A and B. The harbour master monitors
VHF 66a. A drying rock is marked in the middle of the
entrance. Preferred channel is right. It was named for
St. Mary hospital, built here in 1930.
A. John Henry’s Marina - Located in Hospital Bay. The place to visit if you need groceries,
supplies or fuel. They have everything you could want.
B. Pender Harbour Resort offers short and long term moorage, laundry facilities, cottages,
motel rooms, RV and camping spots and a heated pool. Be sure to take the short
walk to Motoko’s Art Gallery.
1. Edgecombe Island – Good anchorage in the north bay. Be careful of the drying rocks -
they are not marked. Edgecombe Island is private property and a favourite hangout for
bald eagles. There are several private floats here. Do not attempt entering the north
bay from the east side of the island.
2. Bargain Bay – Some nice anchorage and protection from all but southeast winds.
Head of the bay provides the best sheltered anchorage with many private floats.
Watch for rocks close to shore when entering. The K.A.S.K. camp is on the southwest
side.
3. Bargain Narrows – Locally known as Canoe Pass. Crossed only at HW with local
Situated on the waterfront
only two blocks from the
Sechelt day float.
Pebbles Restaurant is open
10. Garden Bay Marine Park – On the east shore has a dinghy dock, outhouses, drinking
water, nice anchorage in front of it, and includes Mount Daniel. Note the outstations
for the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club and the Seattle Yacht Club. Sportsman Marina has
outstations for the Burrard and West Vancouver Yacht Club.
11. Gunboat Bay – Named after her Majesty’s gunboats. Excellent for anchoring. Several
small private floats line the shores. Upon entering the bay through a narrow and shallow
channel, there is a sizable beach of oyster shells on the north.
12. Welbourn Cove – Anchorage, a large public float, boat launch, power, garbage and used
oil disposal facilities.
13. Madeira Park – Named after the Island of Madeira near Portugal. Main community of
Pender Harbour with a variety of stores.
14. Mary Islet – Marks the entrance to Gerrans Bay. Stay clear of Griffin Ledge (east) as it
is very shallow. Just southwest of Mary Island is Calder and Dusenbury Islands.
15. Gerrans Bay – Good anchorage at the head which is known as Whiskey Slough. You’ll
find a public float & power.
to your battery bank size. We see many boaters whose alternators
barely keep up with the loads while onboard. In some cases the
loads on the batteries exceed the charging capacity of the alternators.
Over time the batteries will drain even if the motors are
running.
Stephen King has a saying that “There is no harm in hoping for
the best as long as you are prepared for the worst”. There is no
substitute for regular maintenance to ensure that your cruising
season is worry-free.
