Aspiring bloggers or Instagrammers,
welcome home. Merida is a
photographers dream, especially if,
like me, you have a thing for doors.
Every house, every shop a different
door colour, and the buildings pretty
much follow suit. Everything is just a
perfect shade of pastel, with photo ops
guaranteed to up your Insta game.
Foodie delights
Mexican food is delish – standard.
But Merida specifically has upped its
food game of late, recently opening
up the hipster-esque Mercado 60, an
open air food market offering up a
whole range of options. Of course
you’ve got local Yucatán specialities
like Cochinita (pork) pibil, but with
sushi, burgers, Middle Eastern and
heaps more to pick from, there’s
something for everyone. Plus, the live
music gives it a real atmosphere.
Local wares
I refuse to leave a new country
without taking something home to
remind me of my time there. Let me
tell you, Merida makes the rule of
buying only one thing pretty damn
hard. As the capital of Yucatán, the
city is a hub for sellers from all over
the region, so you can pick up the
most amazing things. Everything from
bright, colourful fruit and veg, to
hammocks and panama hats that are
the real deal, are sold throughout the city.
