Labelling, Coding & Marking
Fast and flexible drink
labelling was on show
Logopak showcased its
latest product at drinktec,
the 500+ series, which
is designed to provide high
performance, exceptional
flexibility and ease of use.
The new 500+ series
labelling system achieves an
output of over 140 labels per
minute in real-time labelling
which facilitates individual
labelling of different
products without time lost
through changeovers.
The synchronised label and
thermo-transfer running length
of 800 metres is a special
feature to minimise line stops.
The standard machines
are modular and can be
configured to meet specific
requirements. With over 30
applicators that are easy to
assemble, all conventional
affixing variations (top, front
and side labelling) can be
applied with great flexibility.
The 500+ series facilitates the
thermo-direct and thermotransfer
pressure method
for labels up to A5. Inwardly
and outwardly rolled labels
and thermo-transfer rolls are
The production capacity
of Multivac Marking &
Inspection in Enger, Germany
is to be expanded with a
modern extension to the
production hall which will
enable the logistics and
assembly processes to be
optimised. The building
work has already begun,
and the planned date for
putting the new production
hall into operation is April
next year.
Nearly 200 staff are
employed at Enger and once
processed at widths of up to
165 mm. The machines can
also be used in stand-alone
operation without a PC or
connection to a higher-level
software system.
Logopak says the operation
of the 500+ series labelling
system is extremely userfriendly.
For example the
printing units, which are
designed as quick-change
systems, can be easily
exchanged while all existing
printing units from previous
Expansion plans will bring
capacity increases for units
the new building is complete,
the current operating area of
5,800sq m will increase by
about 1,600sq m. Multivac is
investing about 2.5 million
euros in the new production
hall, which, with its reinforced
concrete supporting structure
and its flat roof made of
trapezoidal steel sheets,
is being constructed in
accordance with the latest
energy-saving regulations and
renewable energy legislation.
The 500+ series machines
can also be equipped with
RFID technology and also
scanner barcode validation
models are compatible with
the new series. The remaining
running time is displayed
depending on the cyclic
output for the expendable
material in the rolls, and
the pre-warning signal for
the end of the roll can be
individually set.
Crafty coder
meets high
speed needs
A Linx 8900 continuous ink
jet (CIJ) printer is being used
for coding onto beer cans at
a successful craft brewery in
London because of its ease of
use, compatibility with highspeed
canning lines, and reliable
operation in a damp environment.
The machine is printing a
single line code, using Linx black
fast-drying 1240 ink, onto the
bottom rim of the can, ensuring
accurate placement and excellent
legibility in this small area.
The 2-3mm high code comprises
best before date and batch code
for traceability purposes.
Beavertown Brewery had
originally used a Linx CJ400
CIJ printer for all its coding
requirements, but upgraded to the
8900 after undergoing a dramatic
expansion that saw its production
batches increase from 700 litres
to 10,000 litres, the equivalent
of 77,000 litres of beer per week.
This meant much higher speeds
on its canning line.
The Linx 8900 is able to handle
the line’s current maximum speed
of 200 cans per minute as well as
higher speeds should throughput
have to increase further as
demand for Beavertown Brewery’s
products continues to grow.
Equally important, the printer can
also cope with the line’s variable
speed, ensuring code quality.
