In preparation for my trip to South America,
I stumbled on an interesting detail about
this country situated among the forests and
mountains of the Andes. I learnt of a relentless
treasure hunt that has kept people searching
for over four centuries. The hunt stretches
from giant rocky plateaus, to red-sedimentary
lakes and to craggy caves of the Andes, which
was home to the Inca Indians.
Sucre, home to 5,000
dinosaur footprints
Sucre was the first stop in my journey to
explore the mysteries of Bolivia. Located
on the outskirts of Sucre is a nearly vertical
1,200m long and 80m high limestone cliff
where hundreds of dinosaur footprints were
accidentally discovered when the grounds were
being cleared by a local cement company.
During the Cretaceous period, this site was
once a lakeside area that was home to a diverse
population of dinosaurs. The feet of the
dinosaurs sank deep into the soft ground when
it was hot and humid. The footprints hardened
when the area experienced severe droughts,
and then were buried under layers of mud
once the rain returned.
was kept was filled with gold and silver within two months. The royal family took all the treasures
execution of the king. Upon hearing the death of the king, those who carried gold on the back of
Our local guide said the cycle repeated seven
times, hiding layers of footprints. The tectonic
activity then pushed the flat ground up,
forming the almost vertical cliff that we see
today. The Sucre government was beyond
thrilled when this amazing site was found.
They began to build museums, life-size models
of the giant dinosaurs, and an observatory, so
visitors could view the dinosaur tracks. Sucre
is now a historic site with the most dinosaur
footprints in the world.
