Thursday March 23 2017 Chippendale – Sydney suburb reborn .kiwi • By Mike Yardley SHRUGGING OFF decades of grime, crime and decay, the once-dodgy little district of Chippendale, is a village reborn in Sydney. Walk south from the Central Railway Station down the wide expanse of Broadway, flanked by faded glories like the old Grace Bros Department Store, a Queen Anne-style bastion, crowned with copper domes. Feeling a fizz of anticipation, soon shuffling into view was the road sign “Kensington St” and the sturdy curves of The Old Clare Hotel. What is now one of the city’s trending boutique design hotels sprung from the loins of the grimy old administration building for Carlton & United Brewery. The industrial heritage-listed site also houses the fiendishly popular Kensington Street Social, where the chilled out menu is all about Mediterranean share plates, showcasing the best of Aussie produce and wine. Save some room for a sweet treat and pop into another Kensington St haunt, Koi, where Reynold Poernomo of IN VOGUE: The former Carlton & United Brewery administration building is now a bustling boutique hotel and home to the Kensington Street Social. (Right) – Spice Alley serving streetfood cheap eats. MasterChef fame, will exhilarate you with his wondrous dessert bar fare. The real show-stopper though, is Spice Alley, which has grown from strength to strength in the past couple of years. The brainchild was Singaporean chef, Alex Lee who envisaged the potential of developing Sydney’s first outdoor Singaporean-style hawker centre, serving street-food cheap eats. Chippendale is also stamping its mark on Sydney’s cultural landscape. Over two dozen galleries, from the imposing to the pocket-sized can be found in the precinct. My favourite would have to be Judith Neilson’s White Rabbit Gallery which houses the world’s largest collection of contemporary Chinese art, outside China. This billion-dollar wonderland of colossal sculptures and political pop art is electrifying and unmissable. Other fun stops include aMBUSH and Galerie Pompom. In spite of the gritty bohemian beat to Chippendale, there’s also an unmistakable dose of the shiny and new. The Central Park development is where necks swivel and jaws-drop. Flanked by gardens and kinetic sculptures, One Central Park is a futuristic 30-storey skyscraper and a symbol of sustainability with a cantilvered heliostat, dispersing natural sunlight. It’s also the world’s tallest vertical garden, clad in over 35,000 plants. That’s big brag factor. If you’re wandering back to the CBD, take a walk along the Goods Line, reminiscent of New York’s High Line. This shared walking and cycling path runs from Chippendale all the way to Darling Harbour, on a partly elevated decommissioned railway line. In the past year, there were 65 crashes which left people injured after drivers ran red lights, up from 42 the year before. At the city’s top 10 worst intersections this month, almost 5400 drivers ran red lights in a single day. That was up 31 per cent from last year, and 64 per cent more than in 2014. They do not include people turning right across an intersection on a red light. The worst for red light-runners was the intersection of Blenheim Rd and Mandeville St, where 652 were detected on a single day on Thursday, December 1. Police figures have also grown. In the last year, 1491 people were ticketed for running red lights in Christchurch, up from 1316 the year before and 1266 in 2014. Canterbury road policing manager Inspector Al Stewart (left) said he was disappointed to see the rise. “It puts people at risk. They may get away with it 99 out of 100 times, but it is that one time which could leave someone injured or killed,” he said. He said police had a focus last year on bad driving at intersections, which included red light-running, and that would continue until the numbers improved.
