Introduces student to the constructs of criminal psychology.<br />
Introduces the student to the exploration of<br />
criminal investigative analysis, VI-CAP, mental disorders<br />
and the etiology of certain criminal behaviors.<br />

ADJ 190 Coordinated Internship (1 to 5 Cr)<br />
Supervises on-the-job training in selected business,<br />
industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.<br />
Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be<br />

ADJ 201 Criminology<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Studies current and historical data pertaining to criminal<br />
and other deviant behavior. Examines theories that<br />
explain crime and criminal behavior in human society.<br />

ADJ 205 Causes of Crime and Delinquency (3 Cr)<br />
Teaches the principal causes, conditions, motives, and<br />
other influences which tend to encourage young persons<br />
or adults to become involved in illegal acts or criminal<br />
careers, crime, and delinquency rates. Adult and juvenile<br />
justice systems will also be compared and studied.<br />
Lecture 3 hours. Total 3 hours per week. College reading<br />

ADJ 211 Criminal Law, Evidence and Procedures I<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Teaches the elements of proof for major and common<br />
crimes and the legal classification of offenses. Studies the<br />
kinds, degrees and admissibility of evidence and its<br />
presentation in criminal proceedings with emphasis on<br />
legal guidelines for methods and techniques of evidence<br />
acquisition. Surveys the procedural requirements from<br />
arrest to final disposition in the various American court<br />
systems with focus on the Virginia jurisdiction. Part I of<br />
II. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

ADJ 225 Courts and the Administration of Justice<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Studies court systems with emphasis on the technical<br />
procedures required, from incident occurrence to final<br />
disposition of the case, noting the applicable principles<br />
of civil and criminal law; focuses on Virginia courts,<br />
laws, and procedures. Prerequisite ADJ 130 or divisional<br />
approval. Lecture 3 hours per week. College reading<br />
and writing competence required.<br />
ADJ 227 Constitutional Law for Justice Personnel<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Surveys the basic guarantees of liberty described in the<br />
U. S. Constitution and the historical development of<br />
these restrictions on government power, primarily<br />
through U. S. Supreme Court decisions. Reviews rights<br />
of free speech, press, assembly, as well as criminal procedure<br />
guarantees (to counsel, jury trial, habeas corpus,<br />
etc.) as they apply to the activities of those in the criminal<br />
justice system. Lecture 3 hours per week. College<br />
reading and writing competence required.<br />
ADJ 228 Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs (3 Cr)<br />
Surveys the historical and current usage of narcotics and<br />
dangerous drugs. Teaches the identification and classification<br />
of such drugs and emphasizes the symptoms and<br />
effects on their users. Examines investigative meth- ods<br />
and procedures utilized in law enforcement efforts<br />
against illicit drug usage. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />
ADJ 229 Law Enforcement and the Community<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Considers current efforts by law enforcement personnel<br />
to achieve an effective working relationship with the<br />
community. Surveys and analyzes various interactive<br />
approaches of law enforcement agencies and the<br />
citizenry they serve. Lecture 3 hours per week. College<br />
reading and writing competence required.<br />
ADJ 232 Domestic Violence<br />
(3 Cr)<br />
Surveys historical issues that have affected family violence.<br />
Examines current trends in the context of the<br />
criminal justice system. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />
ADJ 234 Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism (3 Cr)<br />
Surveys the historical and current practices of terrorism<br />
that are national, transnational, or domestic in origin.
