AGR 190 Coordinated Internship<br />

(1-5 Cr)<br />

Supervises on-the-job training in selected business,<br />

industrial or service firms coordinated by the college.<br />

Credit/practice ratio not to exceed 1:5 hours. May be<br />

repeated for credit. Variable hours.<br />

AGR 205 Soil Fertility and Management (3 Cr)<br />

Studies the factors influencing soil productivity with<br />

emphasis upon fertilizer materials from production to<br />

application. Discusses time, sources, and soil acidity.<br />

Presents soil testing techniques, interpretation of soil<br />

tests, and the addition of nutrients to correct or prevent<br />

deficiencies. Lecture 2 hours. Laboratory 2 hours. Total<br />

4 hours per week.<br />

AGR 231 Agribusiness Marketing, Risk Management,<br />

and Entrepreneurship<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Covers marketing techniques required to create an effective<br />

marketing plan addressing product, price, place,<br />

promotion, and people considerations of an agribusiness.<br />

Emphasizes unique aspects of agricultural products<br />

and risk management including price fluctuations<br />

and biosecurity. Projects explore entrepreneurship and<br />

creative marketing plans for a proposed farm or agribusiness.<br />

Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 232 Professional Selling for Agribusiness (3 Cr)<br />

Explores sales and marketing careers in the agricultural<br />

industry. Analyzes customer’s personality profile and<br />

needs to formulate an effective value-based sales presentation.<br />

Covers psychology of personality styles, buyer<br />

motivation, and conflict resolution. Researches agriculture<br />

customers and products to make a realistic sales call<br />

with actual sales professionals. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 233 Food Production, Safety, Biosecurity, and<br />

Quality Control<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Explores food production practices and their influence on<br />

food product quality, nutrition, and safety. Covers<br />

processing techniques for reducing spoilage, increasing<br />

farmer’s share of the food dollar and diversifying farm<br />

incomes. Includes analytical methods for tracking and<br />

reporting quality control practices. Explores equipment,<br />

packaging, laws, regulations, standards, and financial<br />

sources for on farm and small-scale processing. Lecture<br />

3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 234 Chemical Application and Pest<br />

Management<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Teaches concepts of proper application of pesticides and<br />

other agricultural chemicals used in landscape and turf<br />

management and in production agriculture; including<br />

application methods, equipment calibration and configuration,<br />

occupational health and safety, and pesticide<br />

laws and regulations. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 241 Agricultural Policy, Leadership, and<br />

Professional Service<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Enhances personal and professional leadership skills to<br />

build consensus and collaboratively solve agricultural<br />

issues. Uses the Virginia legislative process to track and<br />

influence relevant policy. Partners with stakeholders and<br />

key agricultural groups to advocate agriculture’s<br />

importance to society and remove barriers that prevent<br />

farm/agribusiness acquisition and transition. Identifies<br />

relevant professional service and leadership opportunities<br />

that will affect changes for the benefit of agricultural<br />

and rural communities. Covers current policy and public<br />

programs related to taxation, land use, environmental<br />

protection, water quality, population changes, water<br />

conservation, climate change and quality of rural life.<br />

Reinforces written and oral communication skills. Lecture<br />

3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 242 Animal Production, Products and Emerging<br />

Technologies<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Teaches theoretical and practical science-based animal<br />

production and management systems; principles of<br />

nutrition, reproduction, economics, and breeding and<br />

selection of beef cattle, swine, sheep, poultry, goats, fish<br />

and other specialty animal enterprises. Includes management<br />

practices, marketing, housing, and mitigation of<br />

environmental impacts with emphasis on profitable<br />

business enterprises for small to medium sized producers<br />

and collaborative opportunities to expand profitability<br />

for traditional enterprises. Introduces emerging<br />

technologies influencing production practices and new<br />

products. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

AGR 244 Agricultural Alternative Energy Solutions<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Explores agricultural animals, plants, and specialty<br />

enterprises that produce energy as well as wind and solar<br />

energy solutions. Encourages students to assess current<br />

energy use of an existing residential or commercial site<br />

and implement energy reduction strategies, and student’s<br />

proposals implement current technology
