HIS 180 Historical Archaeology<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Introduces both the methods and theories in historical<br />

archaeology as practiced in the United States and worldwide.<br />

Includes time and space, field survey, excavation,<br />

archival and laboratory research. Includes field trips to<br />

site excavations. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

HIS 187 Interpreting Material Culture (3 Cr)<br />

Surveys America’s material culture and provides techniques<br />

to interpret artifacts. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

HIS 188 Field Survey Techniques for Archaeology<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Provides an introduction to basic field techniques used in<br />

surveying archaeological and architectural sites. Emphasizes<br />

hands-on experience in both classroom and<br />

field work. Includes methods to identify and record archaeological<br />

sites and standing structures, to nominate<br />

sites to the National Register of Historic Places, to address<br />

relevant preservation laws, to preserve, mark, and<br />

catalogue artifacts in the laboratory. Lecture 3 hours per<br />

week.<br />

HIS 262 United States History in Film (3 Cr)<br />

Examines selected topics in the United States history<br />

which shaped the American experience, presented in<br />

film. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisite: demonstrated<br />

proficiency on the placement examination or<br />

successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF 2.<br />

HIS 269 Civil War and Reconstruction (3 Cr)<br />

Studies factors that led to the division between the States.<br />

Examines the war, the home fronts, and the era of<br />

Reconstruction. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisite:<br />

demonstrated proficiency on the placement examination<br />

or successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF 2.<br />

HIS 281 History of Virginia I<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Examines the cultural, political, and economic history of<br />

the Commonwealth from its beginning to the pres- ent.<br />

Part I of II. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisite:<br />

demonstrated proficiency on the placement examination<br />

or successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF 2.<br />

Focuses on the principles and techniques of safety, first<br />

aid, and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Lecture 2 hours<br />

HLT 105 Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (1 Cr)<br />

Provides training in coordinated mouth-to-mouth artificial<br />

ventilation and chest compression, choking, lifethreatening<br />

emergencies, and sudden illness. Lecture 1<br />

HLT 110 Concepts of Personal and Community<br />

Health<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Studies the concepts related to the maintenance of health,<br />

safety, and the prevention of illness at the per- sonal and<br />

community level. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisite:<br />

examination or successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF<br />

Explores the use and abuse of drugs in contemporary<br />

society with emphasis upon sociological, physiological,<br />

placement examination or successful completion of ENF<br />

Provides an understanding of medical abbreviations and<br />

terms. Includes the study of prefixes, suffixes, word<br />

stems, and technical terms with emphasis on proper<br />

spelling, pronunciation, and usage. Emphasizes more<br />

complex skills and techniques in understanding medical<br />

terminology. Lecture 3 hours per week. Prerequisites:<br />

demonstrated proficiency on the placement examination<br />

or successful completion of ENF 1 or ENF 2<br />

HLT 215 Personal Stress and Stress Management<br />

(3 Cr)<br />

Provides a basic understanding of stress and its physical,<br />

psychological, and social effects. Includes the relationships<br />

between stress and change, self-evaluation,<br />

sources of stress, and current coping skills for handling<br />

stress. Lecture 3 hours per week.<br />

HLT 230 Principles of Nutrition and Human<br />

Development<br />

Teaches the relationship between nutrition and human<br />

development. Emphasizes nutrients, balanced diet,<br />
