Acupuncture for pain in
pregnancy
There are many potential causes of pain during pregnancy, some
directly related to pregnancy such as symphysis pubis
dysfunction, some more coincidental such as headache,
toothache and back ache. Research suggests that the majority of
pregnant women resort to taking either ibuprofen or
paracetamol at some point during their pregnancy but both of
these substances are known to cross the placenta into the foetal
circulation. The general advice is to take as little as possible for
as short a time as you can.
A news article has circulated in the popular press in April about
the use of paracetamol or ibuprofen during pregnancy with
headlines such as ‘Taking paracetamol during pregnancy may
make grandchildren infertile’. A recent study has been published
which explores the effect of taking ibuprofen or paracetamol
during pregnancy; the conclusion of this study was that there is
evidence to show that even minimal exposure to these common
over-the-counter medicines can alter cells in the reproductive
organs of the developing foetus (Hurtado-Gonzalez et al, 2018).
In a selection of studies on animals it was found that if the male
foetus was exposed to ibuprofen, paracetamol or aspirin it could
reduce foetal testosterone leading to issues such as incomplete
descent of one or both testicles. In the female foetus it was
shown that small amounts of paracetamol were associated with
a 40-50% reduction in foetal germ cells (egg producing cells) in
the ovaries of the foetus, and smaller ovaries in subsequent
adults. These findings were tested in various ways and the
findings were consistent. While they recommend avoiding
ibuprofen, the official line from the NHS is that paracetamol is
safe to take during pregnancy as they suggest there is no clear
evidence to suggest it is not. It remains to be seen whether this
advice will be reviewed in light of this new study.
So what can you do for pain during pregnancy? As a licensed
acupuncturist with specialist training in acupuncture through the
antenatal period, I would wholeheartedly recommend
acupuncture. A large data review was undertaken in 2014 which
indicated acupuncture to be a safe treatment during pregnancy
(Park et al 2014). As in intervention, acupuncture can be really
effective for a wide variety of pain conditions such as
musculoskeletal pain of symphysis pubis dysfunction, back pain,
neck pain and headaches and other causes of pain such as
sinusitis, headaches etc. As well as offering a non-toxic, drug-free
treatment for pain, acupuncture treatment during pregnancy can
also offer other ‘side-effects’ such as improved energy, improved
mood and better sleep.
There is a point on the body that is traditionally referred to as the
‘Beautiful Baby Point’! It is meant to be needled in a single
needle treatment with a fine, gold needle as the pregnancy
moves from the first to second trimester, and again between the
second and third trimester. In the late 1800s one of the early
translators of Chinese texts claimed this point "gives the child an
especially luminous complexion, the child will sleep at night,
laugh during the day, does not get sick or if he does, the cure is
within a few hours or days, according to the case. The child will
have none of the bad characteristics of the parents, but rather a
healthy mind, morale and body." [SOULIÉ DE MORANT]
I have considered ordering some special gold needles just for this,
however I have yet to find any classical source for such claims!
Brooks Williams in concert is the next high quality music night
produced by Maldon based creative enterprise macTheatre who
work independently to bring remarkable artists to the area,
igniting local creativity and engaging new audiences with the
spirit of live performance. Brooks will be returning to The Blue
Boar Hotel on Sun 29 April, 8pm.
Hailing from Statesboro, Georgia, the town made famous by
country-blues legend Blind Willie McTell and not one easy to
pigeon-hole, Williams’ music is a roots music love-child. “Soulful
Americana, full-on blues and tasty rootsy grooves. He really
rocks!” writes fRoots. and friend and fellow guitar-wizard Martin
Simpson calls Brooks Williams the “Real Thing!” Williams got his
start in the clubs and bars around Boston, the same music scene
that years earlier sparked the careers of Bonnie Raitt and Chris
Smither. There, playing 5-6 nights a week, he developed his
signature sound. He’s a mean finger-picker and a stunning slide
guitarist, and is ranked in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. Plus,
“he has a beautiful voice,” says AmericanaUK, “that you just melt
into.” In fact, $ in 2013 Williams was nominated “best male
vocalist” by the UK’s foremost roots-music mavens, Spiral Earth.
His massive repertoire reads like a roots music Hall Of Fame. From
classic Bessie Smith or Memphis Slim blues to compelling Dave
Alvin and Buddy Miller Americana covers. “On top of all this,”
writes American Roots UK, “is his songwriting, which stands
comparison with virtually any of his peers.” Rooted in tradition,
wryly observed and relevant. With twenty-two albums to his
name, including “Brooks’ Blues” (2017), “My Turn Now” (2016)
and “Shreveport Sessions” (2014), his music shows up on roots
music playlists around the world with WUMB-FM (USA) voting
him in their Top 100 Artists. He is one of acoustic roots music’s
guiding lights and one of its most respected ambassadors. Always
on tour ranging from Dallas to The Netherlands, Boston to
Glasgow, Belfast to Memphis, Little Rock to London, Blues In
Britain says Brooks Williams is, "At the top of his game, setting
new standards and a fresh direction for the blues.”
So how do I remove chocolate
stains from my carpet?
Kevin Barber Owner of Careclean, Carpet Cleaning
Business has been established for over 34 years and will
be writing our featured monthly column on Cleaning
providing tips and guidance to keeping your home clean
and healthy.
Today’s blog will tell you how to remove chocolate stains from
your carpet.
Just follow 5 simple steps…
no sign of the chocolate!
What if there is still evidence of a mark?
If there is still evidence of chocolate, please don’t be tempted
to pull out all your cleaning products. Believe it or not, these
can actually make things a lot worse! Furthermore, if they
aren’t fully rinsed out, they can leave a residue which can
attract dirt and result in future stains.
If you find the chocolate mark late in the day and it’s already
dried, it can be trickier to remove. If this is the case or if the
above method doesn’t work, then give Careclean a call for
advice or to book a free cleaning quote on 01245 323989.
1. If you do find a chocolate stain, firstly scrape off as much as
you can. A blunt knife or a spatula should do the job.
2. Once you’ve dealt with the excess, you need to get yourself a
damp cloth. Dab the area with the cloth. DO NOT rub as this can
damage the fibres and ground any remaining chocolate further
into the carpet.
3. Next, use a dry cloth to dab as much as the moisture away as
possible.
4. You can repeat 2 and 3 again if there are still signs of
chocolate.
5. Now just leave the area to dry naturally. You may still see signs
of a mark until the carpet has fully dried. However, please resist
the temptation to interfere with it.
In the majority of cases, you will find that by morning, there is
FEATURE
Burnham & Dengie Focus 13
Not just your local Plumber!
Bill The Plumber has been established for over 40 years and
offers customers a prompt and professional service, covering all
aspects of plumbing.
Based in Steeple, Essex,
they provide a service
throughout the Dengie
Peninsular and surrounding
areas including Burnhamon-Crouch,
Southminster,
Mayland, South Woodham
Ferrers and Maldon. They
cater for all types of
plumbing work, no matter
how small or large – from
minor repairs to complete bathroom installations; all the work is
completed to the highest standard, with competitive prices and
a full warranty.
They also design, make and sell Flood Prevention devices (water
leaks prevention & detection) WRc, Water Regulations
Advisory Scheme (WRAS)
and insurance approved
and the recommended
‘FLOODCHECK’ .
What is FloodCheck?
Unfortunately, the vast
majority of homes
worldwide have absolutely
no form of water leak
prevention or detection
installed, leaving them open to huge damage should a leak or
flood occur. Typically, such devices are only installed after an
incident of water damage has occurred.
Some insurance companies now stipulate you have to have
FloodCheck installed before they will insure you. It is anticipated
in the future, all new properties will come with a leak
detection/prevention device fitted as standard, in much the same
way as electrical fuse boxes are installed now; more importantly
older homes will require systems to be retrofitted, to protect
home owners, investors and insurance companies from the huge
costs and devastation that water damage can cause.
We strongly believe that the Floodcheck® range of products
(and associated services) can be deployed to properties all over
the world, ensuring that they are safe from leaks or floods,
providing one less stress for their owners.
The Floodcheck® ‘Auto’ valve is a flood prevention device, that
monitors the water supply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365
days of the year, to minimise internal water damage caused by
leaks or floods, protecting your property from internal flooding
by monitoring the water usage and automatically switching off
the mains water supply if the device detects any of the following:
A water leak (or forgotten running tap)
An excess flow of water (e.g. burst pipe)
Low temperature (to prevent frozen pipes)
Zero water usage (e.g. vacant property or owners away)
Our guest speaker at the April meeting was Margaret Mills who
gave a fascinating talk on Wilkie Collins and Mary Elizabeth
Braddon - two late Victorian popular writers. Both lived
unconventional lives hence the title of Margaret's talk . Both
lived at a time when there was a ‘literacy explosion’ and
although Universal education was far in the future, people
sought novels, magazines and periodicals to develop their
literacy skills.
Mary Braddon was born into a seemingly conventional middle
class family but her father fled the country to avoid debtors
prison and never returned. To help the family income Mary
became a child actress but later turned to writing short stories
and travelogues for the growing magazine and periodicals
market. Her income quickly exceeded that of an actress and
enabled her to produce and edit two magazine, the “Belgravia”
and “Temple Bar” . With her growing reputation and financial
independence, Mary turned to writing novels and produced
some 70 in her lifetime. Some remain in print, and her most well
known work Lady Audley’s Secret has been filmed.
The skeleton Margaret refers to is that Mary lived with a married
man and produced six children whilst classed as a housekeeper,
and the death of her lover’s wife eventually freed them to
regularise the arrangement!
Wilkie Collins was part of a somewhat bohemian family. His
father was an artist and the family spent time in Italy and France
where Wilkie became fluent in both languages. He tried
accountancy and the law then started writing short stories and
articles. His friendship with Charles Dickens cemented his place
in the literary world and he is credited as writing the first crime
novel, The Moonstone, which remains in print to this day.
His other most well known work is The Woman in White which
is currently being serialised on BBC One. Collins didn't marry, he
lived with two consecutive lovers and fathered three children,
and his addiction to Laudanum led to a decline in his health and
his work.
MALDON FILM CLUB
The season continues with the screening of Victoria on
Wednesday 9th May followed by our final film for 2017/18, Toni
Erdmann, on Wednesday May 23rd.
Victoria, directed by Sebastian Schipper, tells the story of a
young Spanish woman partying in the night clubs of Berlin
where she has yet to set up roots. Her joie de vivre takes her into
the world of four happy-go-lucky young men. However, the
criminal actions of one of them lead to a chain of event from
which Victoria finds it hard to extricate herself. This remarkable
single take filming gives this movie an added reality which
makes the climax all the more shocking.
The last film of the current season, Toni Erdmann, is described
as “remarkably touching and outrageously funny” with an
element of surprise. Directed by double Palme d’Or winners, the
Dardenne brothers, and nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign
Language Film, Toni Erdmann tells the story of an estranged
father who is trying to re-connect with his busy career focussed
daughter and who in order, to do so employs a rather unusual
strategy.
The Club meets at Maldon Town Hall, doors open at 7.15pm,
wine and soft drinks are available, at a charge, from 7.30pm and
both films begin at 8pm.
So with only 2 films still to be shown this season, why not
come along as a guest and pay just £3 per film.
Details of the films to be screened year will be available shortly
VETERAN BURNHAM SINGER STEVE'S
HOMECOMING BLUES AT THE BARN GIG
ONE of the stars of Blues at the Barns 2018 has spoken of his
excitement at returning to play in the town his family called
home for many years.
Veteran roots and country singer and guitarist Steve Somers
will play his first Essex gig in decades when he leads the Steve
and Ben Somers Country Band at the festival, in Creeksea, near
Burnham-on-Crouch, on Sunday, May 6.
Steve lived in Burnham with wife, Pat and their family in the
1980s, when he was a much-loved entertainer, playing sold-out
shows in local venues in between live and TV appearances all
over the UK and Europe.
The family later moved to Cambridgeshire and then to France,
Steve and Pat returning to the UK in 2016 to be close to their
grandchildren. The return heralded a whole new phase to
Steve's 50-years-plus musical career - one which sees him sharing
stages across Europe with his multi-instrumentalist son, Ben, 39.
Steve said: "Coming back to Burnham for me is truly like
coming home. I wish I lived there now. I lived on Tillingham
marshes as a youngster and when I got married, we bought our
first house, in Mildmay Road, Burnham. I was playing in
Burnham when I won New Faces on the TV in 1975."We played
the Carnival Hall when I joined The Settlers , which was a bit of
a coup as we were still enjoying chart success with our record,
the Lightning Tree, and playing some very big venues at the
time. Playing to Burnham audiences was always like playing at
a friend's party."
After singing and playing guitar in folk clubs in the Sixties,
Steve enjoyed national success in 1975, winning TV's New Faces
talent show - the X Factor of its day - going on to join successful
folk/pop outfit The Settlers.
Steve later played and sung with stars, including skiffle legend
Lonnie Donegan, Cockney singer Joe Brown, American legends
Johnny Tillotson and Don Everly and pop star Lulu. He also
toured with Glen Campbell, Johnny Cash and Billy Jo Spears, also
touring and broadcasting with his own band.
His son, Ben, followed him into the music business, including
a stint playing saxophone with Jools Holland's Rhythm & Blues
Orchestra, through he sings and plays double bass in the country
band.
The Steve and Ben Somers Country Band play the Barn Stage
at Blues at the Barns on the evening of Sunday, May 6, at
Creeksea Place Farm, Creeksea, just outside Burnham.
Tickets cost £25 for the day (£8, under-12s) and are on sale
now at the venue, by phone from 01621 786503 and online at
www.bluesatthebarns.moonfruit.com
New for 2018 will be a dedicated festival campsite, a wide
range of blues and Americana-themed food, and at least one
"Festival Fringe" blues event in Burnham town on the evening
before the festival proper - Saturday, May 5.
Burnham & Dengie Focus
TRAVELLER’S TIPS
If you watch Anglia-TV news, you’ll be familiar with the Norwich
skyline that fills the glass wall behind the presenters. Why not
spend a day in East Anglia’s regional centre and visit some of
these tourist gems? NOW is the time to book your advance rail
tickets for use in July - if you get in quickly, your day in Norwich
might well cost less than a trip into London!
The lowest price for a senior railcard holder along the Crouch
Valley line is £10.60 for a pair of advance singles in standard
class. There’s no time restriction - you might leave on the first
train of the day and arrive in time for a Norfolk breakfast! For
the return journey, our preference would be to route via
Liverpool Street (no extra charge) and avoid changing at
Shenfield. We might also pay a little extra and travel first class.
We could then look forward to complimentary refreshments on
the main line, followed by a roomy seat on one of the through
trains home during the evening peak. Please remember that you
must book well in advance, or you could be disappointed.
Amazingly, these prices have been held low for several years, but
they are strictly limited in numbers. Although you can sometimes
pick up a bargain the night before you travel, it’s better to book
as early as you can.
What would be on our sightseeing list? Norwich has two
excellent shopping malls, but we’re on the look-out for unusual
places that are quite different from what is on offer in Essex.
You’ll find us in the ancient alleyways known as “The Lanes”, as
well as the splendidly art-nouveau Royal Arcade, then on to the
cobbled streets leading down to the Anglican Cathedral.
Museum-lovers will be in their element: as well as the large
collections such as those at the Castle and the Bridewell, there
are many other quiet delights such as the Julian Centre. The
Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is home to some of the most
remarkable works of art in the country, spanning 5,000 years of
human creativity. You’ll find it on the campus of the University
of East Anglia, a short bus ride from the city centre.
Talking of buses, our final tip is to take a bus from Norwich
Railway Station - the uphill slope towards the City Centre is
longer and steeper than it looks!
Happy Travelling - from Paul & Kathrine.
Paul is Communications Officer for Dengie Hundred Bus Users’
Group – if you need help in planning your journey, please email
Norwich Cathedral
Norwich Cathedral has the second-largest spire and the largest
monastic cloisters in England. But it’s not the only significant
religious presence - the Catholic Cathedral of St John the Baptist
is home to stained glass and stonework reflecting the very best
of Victorian Gothic. Nearby you’ll find the wonderful Plantation
Garden, with features inspired from the same movement: an
intriguing fountain, an Italianate terrace and woodland
walkways.
If you don’t find us sharing a picnic lunch beneath the trees, it’s
because we’re grazing on some of the tasty snacks served in and
around the largest open market in Britain. While you’re here, do
find a moment to step inside the entrance hall at Aviva
Voice in a Million (VIAM)
On 14th March, 40 Ormiston Rivers Academy students from
Years 7 to 13 visited Wembley Arena to participate in the annual
Voice in a Million concert.
VIAM, founded in 2009, highlights the predicament of
children in care throughout the world, and looks at the concerns
and difficulties facing potential adopters. The concert raises
awareness for Adoption UK by bringing schools across the
country together to create one big choir.
Students had an opportunity to meet the very popular boy
band, 'Roadtrip', have their t-shirts signed and pictures taken
during the meet and greet. They were also excited to meet the
performer, 'HRVY' and watch him on stage.
Performing Arts Instructor, Miss Clare Thurtle said, “This
experience has given many of our students the confidence to
perform in front of large numbers. There were around 15,000
spectators at the event, and each student thrived in the busy
atmosphere. It has been beneficial for these students to work
with year groups across the school to create a choir and make
new friends, as well as learn about the care and fostering system
in the UK. They all performed outstandingly and had a
wonderful day. I am so proud of all of the students and am
looking forward to VIAM 2019!”
Walton on the Naze
Eight Rivers Sixth Form students travelled to Walton on the
Naze to undertake research for their A-level Geography course.
They studied the differences between the managed area of
the coast, which has groynes, a crag walk and sea wall; and
compared the
landform of the beach
to that of the
unmanaged part of the
coastline, which has a
wave-cut platform and
slumping cliffs.
Students considered
the social, economic
and environmental
reasons as to why one
area of the coast is
protected heavily and
another area has been left to the forces of nature. Further
inland from the unmanaged area is a Site of Special Scientific
Interest, with important geology and fossils, which students
found fascinating.
Ms Louise Judge, Assistant Principal said, “Walton on the Naze
is famous for its fossils. One student was lucky enough to find a
sharks tooth in the recent large slumps along the unmanaged
section. Outdoor education is so important, as it gives students
a real sense of the subject and brings their research to life!”
Keelboat Endeavour Trophy
“The launch of this event couldn’t have come at a better time
because we are really noticing a bit of ascendancy in keelboat
racing at the moment. Certainly the smaller dayboats are seeing
a resurgence.
“Overall, I think it is a really good time for keelboat sailing
and I can confirm the Royal Corinthian at Burnham, and the RYA
are pretty excited about having an opportunity to showcase
keelboat sailing at its best.”
Buckley, who is delighted to be able to build on the success of
the Endeavour, added: “This is also another step in history of the
Endeavour and I know that the original founders of the dinghy
event that celebrates 58 years this year, would be delighted to
see the Endeavour Trophy evolve by expanding the event from
dinghies to keelboats.”
A total of 24 keelboat teams are expected to contest the title,
which will take place over short, windward/leeward courses on
the tactical, tidal waters of the River Crouch and Roach.
The Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, Burnham-on-Crouch (RCYC),
and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) announce the launch of
the Keelboat Endeavour Trophy writes Sue Pelling.
The aim of this new event, scheduled to take place on 22-23
September 2018, is to establish the UK keelboat champions of
champions’, in a similar format to the long-running and successful
annual Endeavour Trophy for dinghies.
The organisers of the event are keen to encourage keelboat
classes to lodge an interest in putting forward class
representatives from the 2018 national championships that take
place throughout the summer.
To ensure your keelboat class is represented at the inaugural
Keelboat Endeavour Trophy, email Edwin Buckley:
endeavour.trophy@royalcorinthian.co.uk.
Using up to six of the RCYC’s fleet of 707s, the Keelboat
Endeavour Trophy will be run in a British Keelboat League-style
knock-out format with 25 plus races over the weekend, and with
RYA on-the-water umpires keeping an eye on proceedings.
The team behind the RCYC and RYA joint venture, including
Edwin Buckley (RCYC Event Director), Bas Edmonds (RYA Racing
Services Manager) and Jack Fenwick (RYA Keelboat Development
Manager) say after three years in the planning they are thrilled
to finally be able to launch the event.
Edmonds commented: “It has been a long time coming but we
are now in a position to run an event that we [RYA and Royal
Corinthian YC, Burnham-on-Crouch] believe will become as
significant as the dinghy Champion of Champions’ Endeavour
Trophy.
“As far as entries go, we are trying to be as inclusive as
possible, particularly in the first year so classes like the J/109,
J/111, Fast40s, and potentially the IRC national champion have
the opportunity to come along. We also expect to see a large
contingent of champions from classes like the Squibs, Flying 15s
and local one-designs that run a national championship and have
exceptionally high quality competition.
BRIGADIER’S RANT
Burnham & Dengie Focus 23
The Great Entitlement Debate
On an unseasonably cold and miserable evening last month,
Daphne and myself, settled in front of the fire with Dambuster,
our dog, at our feet, poised to spend a couple of hours watching
the television. Normally this is a time of conflict in which one
negotiates or rather wrestles for the choice of viewing (I suspect
control of the remote is a common cause of conflict in many
households. In fact some outlandish psychologists have even
gone as far as suggesting that men’s desire to dominate the
remote control represents in some subconscious way a phallic
symbol and its control is an unwitting reflection of their virility…
What nonsense!) Anyway, surprisingly, this particular evening
there were no disagreements and we jointly decided to view two
consecutive programmes, both with an educational theme.
The first was called “Living with the Brainy Child” or something
of that nature. It was a programme about a social/educational
experiment set up by a secondary school head. For six weeks two
grossly underperforming pupils were to live with the families of
two high achieving motivated pupils, following their rules and
routines at home (which they did not always do as it happened.)
The premise was that their academic achievement would have
measurably improved over that time. They were tested on
mathematics at the outset and then retested at the end of their
stay. Not surprisingly their scores did improve, going from
lamentable to faintly mediocre. It was a bit like testing the
hypothesis that “a bed of nails will afford a less comfortable
night’s sleep than a traditional bed.” However the programme
was not without its merits, the greatest of which was the
revelation of the selfish attitude of the underperforming pupils
towards their parents who they saw as being there, simply to
accommodate all their capricious needs and wants.
The second programme was called “The Indian Summer School.”
This, again, was about a social/educational experiment but this
time one in which five white 16/17 year old English boys were to
spend six months in a high achieving Indian all boys school in
attempt to get to a level where they could all pass English, Maths
and Science GCSEs with a grade C.
All five boys struggled to meet the motivational standards and
work ethos of their Indian counterparts in fact three left before
the end of the designated period. Summing up the experiment
shortly after the last remaining two had returned to England,
the Indian School’s head teacher strove to be positive but he had
to admit that he had been shocked by the sense of entitlement
he had witnessed in the English students which was in sharp
contrast to the approach of his own students.
And it is here that perhaps lies the malaise at the heart of
modern England. Too many of our younger generations, and I
mean not just those in their teenage years, are too quick to
complain that the authorities, the government, the NHS, the
council, the police, the school, the teacher, social services, “they”
should have done this or done that, rather than first thinking…
“What are my responsibilities? What can I do to help?
I have said it before and I say it again without shame… Bring in
a mandatory system of community service with an initial six
month period in one’s later teens followed by a couple of week’s
service perhaps every three years. Hard to organise I know but a
worthwhile dream. We might see less lonely old aged people,
less queues in our hospitals, less pot holes, less rubbish in our
roadside hedgerows while at the same enjoying more social
cohesion and a greater sense of community. Yes, this is a dream
worth having.
On a final note, on their return to England, four of the five boys
did resit their exams in November and all failed to achieve the
desired grades. The visible disappointment of two of the boys,
the shattering of their hopes and their families’ hopes for them,
was quite heart wrenching. This went beyond the discussion of
entitlement and raised another difficult issue - that of
guaranteeing our next generation is happy and not pushed
beyond that which it can achieve. Perhaps we need to return to
this sometime in the future.
Pet Rescue
FLICK
25
Now that we’ve finally said goodbye to the last “Beast from the
East” it’s time to prepare for spring and summer. That’s not just
us, but our four-legged friends as well. Whether your friend is
a greyhound or any other type of dog, there are things to
remember in order to ensure they remain healthy and happy in
warm weather.
Balmy breezes can bring unwanted visits from ticks and fleas.
Your Vet can help with preventative treatment, but it’s a good
idea to check your pet regularly. You may miss seeing the fleas,
but you may find the dirt they leave behind. Regular grooming
helps to monitor your dog and most hounds love it. Ticks are a
more dangerous hitchhiker. They may carry Limes Disease,
named for the island off the east coast of America where the
disease was first identified. In 2016 ticks were also found
carrying parasites with the deadly babesiosis disease. Great care
must be taken in removing any oval, grey tick that you find.
Never just pull one from the skin. The head is buried in the tissue
and, if left behind, can result in a dangerous infection. Your Vet
can be the safest port of call unless you have the experience and
fortitude to remove a dead tick in its entirety.
You will no doubt have heard of the dreaded Alabama Rot. With
a low rate of recovery, this quick-acting disease can be picked up
from walking through infected muddy ground. Cleaning your
pet’s feet after a country walk is a good idea. Look for the “paw
bath” when you visit Clark’s Farm.
ON PET HEALTH
CAN YOU RECOGNISE ACUTE
PAIN IN CATS
Recent advances in pain assessment in companion animals
represent a tenacious, painstaking ad time consuming dedication
to improving animal welfare. Recently gained knowledge about
pain assessment in animals, particularly in cats, has increased the
use of pain-relief in hospitalised patients.
It is necessary, from an ethical and humane point-of-view, to
prevent and relieve suffering and pain in all animals, but because
this article is about cats, I will refer primarily to cats. The
understanding of the pain mechanism has progressed at a far
faster rate than the ability to assess pain in animals because of
the lack of assessment markers. The term ‘pain’ is a combination
of the actual physical (sensory) injury and the emotional or
affective state, which makes pain very subjective. This means that
if two cats are faced with the same surgery, for example,
neutering, the physical ‘injury’ is the same and one would expect
the same response (in terms of pain) in both cats, but because
there is an emotional component to the experience of pain, cats
do not react in the same way. This is the same for humans.
how do we recognise and grade acute pain in cats? There are
two validated composite scoring systems; composite scales aim
to assess the affective component and pain intensity. The more
time-consuming is the UNESP-Botucata Multidimensional Pain
scale consists of 10 behavioural categories and includes appetite
and blood pressure measurement. This is freely available at
http://www.animalpain.com.br/assets/upload/escala-en-us.pdf
The Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale for acute pain in
cats is composed of seven questions, with a possible score of 20,
with a guide of pain relief intervention for scores equal to or
above 5. The scale is available to download from
Pain assessment in the presence of the caregiver may affect the
response and can contribute to a placebo effect. Pain scales offer
a very helpful tool in the assessment of pain, but should not be
used in isolation. They are best used as an adjunct to a
comprehensive clinical assessment.
Jürgen Theinert BVSc BSc MRCVS
Edgewood Veterinary Group
Pain assessment is a routine part of a clinical examination,
following temperature, pulse rate and respiratory rate; pain
assessment can be considered the fourth vital sign. It must be
appreciated that there is no single behaviour in isolation that is
definitive of pain in cats and that both objective and subjective
assessments must be made to determine the level of pain being
experienced by the individual cat. One must also appreciate that
the absence of certain behaviours does not mean the cat is not
experiencing pain. Because of the emotional component of pain,
it is very helpful to know the normal behaviour of the cat prior
to surgery. Pain behaviours can be very subtle and can take a
long time to recognise and can be associated with fear,
apprehension or anxiety and with cognitive dysfunction. All-inall,
cats are a little difficult when assessing the level of pain being
felt!
The common behavioural signs of pain in cats include:
• Depression, immobility or reluctance to move
• Hunched posture with low head position
• Eyes semi-closed: ‘squinting’
• Vocalisation
• Changed facial expression
• Restlessness
• Lower tolerance of handling or interaction with the caregiver,
manifested in aggression or a flight/fight response
• Increased reaction to wound palpation or manipulation of
painful area
• Changes in locomotion: may include limping, reluctance to
jump/climb
• Change in appetite
• Change in grooming habits
• Tail flicking and swishing
• Change in pulse and respiration rates
• Change in urination/defaecation habits
Vocalisation is a non-specific behaviour and cats do not always
vocalise when in pain, but they may hiss, growl or spit. Some cats
become very quiet when they are in pain; this must not be
construed as a sign of comfort! Inappropriate loud vocalisation
may occur in ageing cats with cognitive dysfunction syndrome. So
Gardening
Burnham & Dengie Focus
FOCUS
ON GARDENING
VEGETABLES
behind so that the other plants are not disturbed. Others prefer
not to do this as they do not like the idea of the rotting remains
next to healthy plants.
Towards the end of this month the threat of late frosts should
diminish and it should be possible to sow tender vegetables,
such as beans and courgettes, in the open. If they start to appear
through the soil and there is forecast of a frost, cover them with
fleece or drape newspaper over the row. Remove these as soon
as the frost lifts.
Also towards the end of the month, once the frosts are passed,
plants of tender vegetables that have been sown under glass
can be planted out. Make certain that they are hardened off
before they are planted. Tender herbs, such as basil, can also be
planted out at this time of year.
Continue to sow successional crops at fortnightly intervals
throughout the month.
As the season warms up pests are likely to increase in numbers.
Keep an eye out for them and take appropriate action. Blackfly
on broad beans is one of the big problems at this time of year.
One way of coping with this is to take preventative action and
remove the succulent tips of the plants on which the aphids
congregate. The best time for pinching out the tips is when the
plant is in full flower.
TENDER VEGETABLES
Sow the following after frosts have finished or sow them under
glass and plant out after threat of frost has passed: aubergines,
celeriac, celery, courgettes, cucumbers, French beans, marrows,
melons, peppers, pumpkins, runner beans, squashes, and
tomatoes.
It is essential that seedlings and eventually plants do not
become too crowded. Overcrowded plants become spindly and
do not develop correctly. They are usually malnourished and are
frequently more prone to disease than plants that have space
around them to grow properly. Remove unwanted seedlings as
soon as possible. Choose a day when the soil is moist but not
ringing wet. If the soil is crumbly, the unwanted plants can be
pulled out of the ground, leaving the healthiest ones
undisturbed. Some gardeners prefer to break off or cut the stem
of the unwanted seedling at ground level, leaving the roots
Carrots are always a problem because the smell of the bruised
leaves and stems travel a long way and can attract the carrot root
fly to the remaining plants, where they soon make their
unwelcome home. The best way to avoid this is to sow very thinly
in the first place, then there is less thinning to do. Another point
to remember is to carry out the thinning in muggy, windless
weather when the tell-tale smell does not travel far. Bury the
thinning on the compost heap to mask the smell.
As we garden a-pace at this time of year, remember to stop
occasionally for that well-earned cuppa.
