Walkers in Essex
asked to unite
against Parkinson’s
Essex residents are being asked to
unite with thousands of people
across the UK and Walk for
Parkinson’s at RHS Garden Hyde Hall on Sunday 8 July.
The event will raise vital funds for the charity Parkinson’s UK, and is one
of many walks taking place all over the UK throughout 2018.
Two people are diagnosed with the condition every hour in the UK and
Walk for Parkinson’s events aim to raise over £500,000 for research to
step closer to a cure.
There are longer and shorter distances to choose from, so whether
you’re up for a challenging walk or a gentle stroll, there’s something
for everyone. At Hyde Hall distances include a 2-mile and 5-mile walk to
choose from.
It’s the first time Parkinson’s UK has hosted a Walk for Parkinson’s at
Hyde Hall. Previous walks in the area have seen more than 200 local
people take part, so the charity hopes to involve even more walkers with
the new and exciting venue.
Sky Sports Presenter and Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK Dave
Clark was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2011. He is a keen walker
himself and is encouraging people to get involved.
He said: “We want to make 2018 our biggest year yet for the Walk for
Parkinson’s series. I’d like to invite everyone, whatever their level of
fitness, to take advantage of the many different types of walks, scenic
routes and distances available. Exercise can be really beneficial to people
living with Parkinson’s. It is as important to
me as my medication in helping me take
control and manage my symptoms.
“So please join us at Walk for Parkinson’s at
Hyde Hall. Every step takes us closer to a cure
and our goal of improving the lives of
everyone affected by Parkinson’s.”
The registration fee is £10 for adults and £5
for under 16s. Everyone who registers will
receive a free Parkinson’s UK t-shirt,
fundraising pack and at the end of the walk,
a finisher’s medal.
As the charity is hoping to raise over
£500,000 from the 37 events it suggests
walkers aim to raise at least £50. All the
money raised from the event will fund
research to help to find a cure and improve
the lives of the 145,000 people in the UK
living with Parkinson’s.
Parkinson’s UK is also looking for volunteers
to help register people at the start/finish
area, or to be a walk marshal at various
points on the route during the day.
To find out more, or to sign up to walk or
volunteer at the event, visit:
SEMINAR
Why choose Reflexology as a
Holistic Therapy?
Many people choose to have a session of reflexology as a special
treat as it is commonly seen as a pampering therapy but this is a
very limiting view. Agreed, reflexology is a wonderfully relaxing
and de-stressing experience as a one off but it can provide so
much more when received regularly. This is because holistic
therapies are proactive rather than reactive and are used to help
either maintain a healthy body or to turn a bothering condition
around that has been present for a long time.
As a holistic therapist, I look at the integrated body and not just
at presenting symptoms because symptoms may be just the tip of
the iceberg. The body is intelligent and through creating the
symptoms it brings to our attention that something is not in
balance and the immune system is not strong. Long term stress,
anxiety and worry are major factors in depleting the immune
system and weakening it’s function.
This is where reflexology is useful as it promotes relaxation in
the body and as a result the production of stress hormones is
switched off. Although stress hormones are essential for our
survival, we don’t want to constantly be in the active phase of
the “fight or flight” reaction because they cause such a strain in
the body when they are constantly being released.
Receiving regular reflexology treatments really is a long term
investment in yourself. It facilitates the level of relaxation
needed by the body to help heal itself and also cope with the
current stresses and strains of life. Along with a sensible lifestyle
the treatments will help the body to overcome weaknesses and
to build up new strength and vitality.
I can offer either foot or facial reflexology. Both are profoundly
relaxing and address imbalances, but facial reflexology also
delivers anti-aging results. Or combine facial reflexology with
zone face lift therapy as a really focused anti-aging treatment
that delivers results. For further information please visit my
website www.theholisticexperience.com. Or if you would like to
make an appointment, please contact me on 07443 33 9378 or
Essex based landscaping firm Daniel Windsor Landscapes has
won the Best Small Patio 2017 award at the Brett Approved
Installer (BAI) Awards.
Brett Landscaping, one of the leading manufacturers of high
quality paving and landscaping products has become renowned
for its annual Approved Installer Awards event, a
concept originally launched in 2007 to celebrate the
achievements of paving contractors who are members
South 12 Woodham Focus
South Woodham Focus
There is a prayer which is attributed to Sir Francis Drake the sixteenth century sailor who was one
of the earliest people to sail round the world and show it was a globe and not flat with edges that
you could fall off. He said that in all walks of life "it is not the beginning, but the continuing of the
same, until it is thoroughly finished, that yieldeth true glory". A beginning is usually prompted by
a good intention. I would be very surprised if you couldn't think of something, probably several
things, that you started but didn't complete. Learning to play a musical instument, participating in
a new sport, training to develop a new skill, pushing yourself to overcome a fear, and the list goes
on!. Perhaps today we have too many distractions that cause us to give up, to loose heart, to look
for a reason to stop.
!"#$%#&
'()*+,&$%&
The list of things you might have started but given up isn't always an indication of a failure. Often it is a recognition
that you were not cut out to do that thing. Sometimes we don't know what we are able to do until we try it. Other
times we try it and carry on until our body or our mind recognises that it is just not for us. That's fine. At least you
tried. Well done. But how about those things that you started, could have carried on, but gave up. Was it a lack of
interest? Was it perhaps a lack of encouragement from friends and family? Was it because you couldn't afford to
carry on? Was it because the support you needed was no longer there? Or was it simply a case of you were too old
to carry on? These are all valid reasons for not finishing.
But then there are those things in life that we start and give up when we shouldn't. These are the things we need
to question ourselves about. Some will be simple, even superficial, but others will be deep, and what is more affect
someone else or a range of people. We give them up for a selfish reason. We don't consider the effect on others. A
friendship, a relationship, an activity that gives joy, help and assistance, support, comfort to others. Is it more
important to satisfy ourselves than to think of the effect on those around us? And how many have given up their
faith in the living God, the Lord Jesus. There is NO EXCUSE for giving Him up. The amazing thing is God allows you
always to re-start where you left off.
This is a Christian Aviation Charity operating more than 135 light
aircraft in and around 26 developing countries bringing help and
healing to the most remote communities.
They have been doing this for 70 years and assisting nearly 1500
Oxfam, Christian Aid and Tearfund.
They perform medical and emergency airlifts as well as fly in
They bring food and aid workers as well as teachers and school
To travel by road is either very difficult or is very dangerous for
the helping agencies to gain access to the communities that need
them. MAF play the important part in giving transport to
overcome the difficulties with their light aircraft which can land
ASTHMA DEATH RATES IN THE UK ARE AMONG THE WORST IN EUROPE
says Paul Gallagher in the i newspaper – and the story is also extensively covered
elsewhere. He adds that: “The UK has one of the worst asthma death rates in Europe
with the rate of people dying from an asthma attack increasing by more than 20 per
cent in five years. Asthma UK said the death rate between 2011-15 was also almost
50 per cent higher here than the average on the continent. The charity said the it is
“extremely worried” as the National Review of Asthma Deaths revealed two thirds
of asthma deaths could have been prevented with basic asthma care.
Around 1,400 people died from an asthma attack in the UK in 2015, the most recent
figures show. Air pollution has been blamed for exacerbating the problem.”
Other factors include the fact that patients frequently don’t appreciate the
implications of the diagnosis and don’t use their treatments as advised ... for example
they may overuse their ‘quick fix’ blue reliever inhaler and (in those that need one)
may underuse their ‘preventer’ inhaler. The Asthma UK website has excellent advice
for those who want to extend and update their knowledge of the condition.
One of the fundamental aims is to improve diagnosis of asthma. NICE is
recommending OBJECTIVE tests, which include spirometry and FeNO, to help
confirm a diagnosis of asthma. This can achieve more accurate diagnosis and
therefore more effective treatment, says NICE ... which goes on to explain that ....
Spirometry tests assess how well someone’s lungs work by measuring
how much air they inhale and exhale, and how quickly.
FeNO tests measure the levels of nitric oxide in the breath. Increased
levels are thought to be related to lung inflammation and asthma.
Professor Mark Baker, director of the centre for guidelines at NICE, said: “We are
recommending objective testing with spirometry and FeNO for most people with
suspected asthma; a significant enhancement to current practice.
Most practices in this area can offer their patients Spirometry. Nitric oxide tests are
‘the new kid on the block though and, whilst recommended by NICE as best practice,
facilities are few and far between as the gadgets are costly and require nurses with
expertise in asthma care. The local practices asked ‘the NHS’ to provide these gadgets
having been told that we’d be given a decision on these matters within a day or two.
Six months later we were still waiting! At my practice we are fortunate in having a
Patient Participation Group which believes that actions speak louder than words – so
they paid for one rather than have our patients disadvantaged by having to carry on
waiting for funding to be forthcoming from the NHS. Dr Samantha Walker, director
of research and policy at Asthma UK, says “Asthma kills and we are urging the NHS
to invest in better frontline asthma services.” Let’s hope her call to action is heeded
before too long.
For a straightforward explanation of all this, Google: ‘New ways to diagnose and
manage asthma can improve care, says NICE.’
Even those who don’t mind a plethora of long words, though, should think twice
before they Google: ‘Asthma: diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management
- NICE.’
Maybe it’s not global warming. Maybe it’s just planetary menopause.
FOCUS ON HEALTH
rise in population
The World Ovarian Cancer Coalition (WOCC) reminds us that ovarian cancer has the
lowest survival rate of all female cancers. (Global five-year survival rates range
between 30 and 50 per cent of women, and in most countries have been slow to rise.
By comparison, in many countries, over 80 per cent of women with breast cancer will
survive for five years or more.
PG quotes Elisabeth Baugh, WOCC chair, who said: “Each year on May 8 we
celebrate World Ovarian Cancer Day to help raise awareness of the disease and the
need for change.”
For those of you who are thinking: “Oh no, not another ‘awareness day to go with
all those others (Constipation Awareness Day to name but one) and sympathise with
those who instigated ‘National Nothing Day’ as an antidote, let me tell you that
finding alternative ways of focussing the media’s attention on matters of importance
is well nigh impossible.
I just asked my husband if he remembers what today is. Scaring men is easy!
ESSEX SURGERY CLOSURE PROTEST. The Daily Mail reports that a
“Grandmother, 89, takes to the streets to protest the US firm that is shutting her GP
surgery after 63 years.” Kate Pickles and Miles Dilworth write that: “Mrs Scott
signed up as a patient at the (Harlow) surgery when it first opened in 1955. She and
her late husband Bert moved to the area in 1953. The mother of three remembers the
family doctor rushing to her home in the dead of night when her eldest daughter,
Madeline, had meningitis.”
They quote ‘Connie’ as follows: “‘The family doctor knew all my girls’ names and
would ask after them,’ she said. ‘There was such a community feel about the place.
The community even named a new estate, Meyrick Mead, after Dr John Meyrick, one
of the original doctors at Osler House. But now there is such a huge turnover these
days they don’t have time to get to know you.’
Connie has become the face of a campaign to save her surgery. What are her chances
of success? Those of you with long memories will recall that the late and unlamented
Maldon & S. Chelmsford PCT wanted to close Dr Ashley Pain’s Danbury practice.
The patients and staff mounted a ‘Save Our Surgery campaign and seemingly won
the day. The next thing they knew, the new GP appointed by the PCT had merged the
practice with the larger Lee House Surgery ... which, of course, was what the PCT
had planned from the outset. One suspects Connie’s campaign will suffer the same
fate given that small practices are under ever greater pressure to merge in one form
or another.
You may remember that the late and unlamented Mid Essex PCT awarded the
contract for ‘The New Surgery’ to ‘The Practice Group’ despite applications from
local surgeries/GPs to run it ...any one of which would have made a much better job
of it (whilst saving the taxpayer £100’s of thousands.) Indeed South Woodham’s three
remaining practice managers are still grumbling about the mess they’ve been left to
clear up.
The Mail goes into the background of the Harlow story under the headline: How
Americans grabbed a slice of our NHS. Judge for yourselves how much is relevant
to the situation in SWF.
HOW YOUR DIET CAN (MAYBE) HASTEN THE ONSET OF THE
MENOPAUSE ... or delay it. The BBC reported this week on a study of 914 UK
women, conducted by the University of Leeds which seemingly found that a diet
rich in oily fish and peas and beans may delay natural menopause. It also suggested
that a diet high in carbs could bring on an earlier menopause ... “eating lots of pasta
and rice was associated with reaching menopause one-and-a-half years earlier than
the average age of women in the UK of 51.” A diet high in legumes, which includes
peas, beans, lentils and chickpeas, delayed menopause by one-and-a-half years, on
average.
The Beeb goes on to quote ‘experts’ who say many other factors, including genes,
influence timing of the menopause ... and adds that “it’s not clear how big a
contribution dietary choices might make and women should not worry about
changing what they eat based on the findings.”
The findings were published in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health
– and the study co-author Janet Cade, told the BBC that the age at which menopause
begins can have “serious health implications” for some women. She said: “A clear
understanding of how diet affects the start of natural menopause will be very
beneficial to those who may already be at risk or have a family history of certain
complications related to menopause.” Women who go through the menopause early
are at increased risk of osteoporosis and heart disease, while women who go through
it late are at increased risk of breast, womb, and ovarian cancers.
The study is observational and cannot prove any cause – but, even so, you should
‘watch this space’ as it will spark further research.
The article claims that “The decision to close the Osler House surgery in Harlow has
its roots more than 4,000 miles away in the US. The surgery is part of The Practice
Group – one of the largest GP providers in the UK with around 50 surgeries and
health centres responsible for more than 200,000 patients. But despite dealing with
more than a million NHS appointments a year, the Group’s major stakeholder is a
multi-billion pound health insurance company called the Centene Corporation –
based in St Louis, Missouri.
Changes introduced by the Labour government in 2004, allowed companies to bid for
short-term contracts with NHS clinical commissioning groups. Centene took
advantage of this to buy into The Practice Group, later increasing its stake from 49
to 75 per cent in 2016. It means the company, listed on the New York Stock exchange,
now has the final say over a number of GP surgeries in England, and can close them
if they are not profitable.
Its involvement has coincided with the closure of a number of surgeries by The
Practice Group, often in areas of high deprivation where it is difficult to make a
profit.”
As I’ve mentioned before NHS England admits to saving some £180,000 a year due
to the closure of ‘The Practice’ (on top of the huge chunk of dosh that was saved
when the Clement’s House Practice was sold.) One suspects they look on it as
recouping some of the money that was wasted by the bungling of its antecedent
organisations – but, given that the profligate waste they presided over adversely
affected South Woodham patients, shouldn’t we have some or all of our healthcare
budget back as redress for the mistakes of the past?
I hate cocaine dealers – always sticking their business into other people’s noses
OVARIAN CANCER CASES ARE SET TO RISE says Paul Gallagher (again) in the
i newspaper (again.) They’ll rise by 15 per cent in the UK over the next two decades,
according to new figures ... and, you’ll be relieved to hear, this is largely due to the
3,495 emergency food supplies
given to local people in last
year, Chelmsford Foodbank
reveals
Between 1stApril 2017 and 31stMarch 2018, 3,495 three day
emergency food supplies were provided to local people in crisis
by Chelmsford Foodbank, compared to 3,218 in the previous
year. Of this number, 1,335 went to children.
The foodbank, a member of The Trussell Trust’s network which
has today reported a UK-wide increase foodbank use, believes
the local increase is due to people struggling with continued
issues with benefit payments, insecure or low paid work and
debt. As part of a national network campaigning for change, the
foodbank is working hard to offer practical emergency support
to help prevent people affected going hungry, whilst
simultaneously participating in vital research and raising
awareness about the issues local people are facing.
Ruth Leverett, Foodbank Manager of Chelmsford Foodbank said:
“We don’t want to be here forever. No one in Chelmsford should
need a foodbank’s help and we want to see an end to local
people needing emergency food at all. It doesn’t have to be this
way - with a benefits system that catches people before they fall
into crisis, and secure work that provides people with enough
money to cover the cost of essentials, this is possible. But until
that time, we’ll continue to provide vital support when it matters
most - we’re dedicated to ensuring that people in our
community with no money for food are able to access
emergency support, and that has only been possible in the last
year because of the incredible generosity shown by local people
in donating food, time and funds. Thank you.”
The running costs for the foodbank are around £18,000 a year,
all of which is raised locally to enable them to continue their
work. Costs include warehouse space, to sort and stock donated
food, a van to pick up donated food and deliver to distribution
centres, and other overheads like utilities and insurances. The
foodbank welcomes any new offers of help with funding – local
businesses, organisations and individuals interested in
supporting the foodbank’s work can find out more at
OVER TO YOU.....
MORE CHOICE!
GLUT OF FELINE FRIENDS
To the sympathetic Downleaze resident regarding a glut of
feline friends.
This is ‘catastrophic’ behaviour by these rogue felines and I’m
interested to know what laws they are breaking. I have
considered punishment of ‘cat o nine tails’ may be appropriate
and if this is not effective, the ‘cat snip’
I can ‘categorically’ say no cats were punished during the writing
of this letter .
Kat
CONCERNED!
I am concerned by the behaviour of a group of boys, approx. 13 years
old in Woodham riding round the town being abusive. Last night one of
them with red hair was showing his middle finger to passing drivers. If
the parents could have a word before the police or members of the
public become involved. This isn’t the first time I have seen this group
showing this type of behaviour.
Spring has Sprung at Hyde Hall!
enjoying a day out at RHS Garden Hyde, where after weeks of cool
weather, the warmer temperatures and sunshine this have seen a rush of
blooms and blossom making it a perfect place to enjoy a stroll and bite
to eat.
So this new development will contain a new supermarket called
Sainsburys and monopoly here from Adsa will end. Oh No!, wait hold the
press, put down that cup of coffee, the monopoly will continue here as
Asda and Sainsburys are merging. Come on other Supermarkets, give us
a choice here and oust them from this development so we can have a
Tesco, or Waitrose, Co op, or a range of traditional shops like Fruit and
Veg ones, Butchers, Bakers, and maybe Candlestick makers, old school
style back then!
FOOTBALL FOR ADULTS
I organise casual football matches for adults on the 3G
We play every Tuesday night in all-weather between 9pm-
10pm and hire half of the full size pitch closest to the
centre itself. The cost is £5 on the night.
The sports centre run a strict cancellation policy which
means I need to give them 15 days’ notice if we do not
have enough players and want to cancel, otherwise I still
have to pay. For that reason I need to ask players to
confirm availability in advance and ask that you avoid
dropping out.
Runners Take on the Heat at The 2018 Virgin Money London
Marathon for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity!
The 2018 Virgin Money London Marathon took place on Sunday 22nd
April and Helen Rollason Cancer Charity had 11 fantastic fundraisers
running the world famous route, raising over £31,000 for the charity!
More than 40,000 runners completed the
hottest race day on record, making the 38th
edition of the race the biggest in its history. Her
Majesty The Queen stepped onto a special
podium in front of the Round Tower in the
grounds of Windsor Castle to push the start
button at 10am to officially start the event, and
set off the runners on the famous 26.2 miles.
Julie Saliba, 43 from Colchester was one of the
11 HRCC runners and made it safely to the
finish line in 05:06:19 and has so far raised a
fantastic £1,729.50 with more funds to come
in. Julie also held a cake/bring and buy sale at
Cardinal Bourne Hall, on Priory Street in
Colchester on Wednesday 25th April.
“When I was diagnosed with cancer in 2013 I
went to the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity for support. Over time they
became invaluable to me; it was so nice to have somewhere to park your
concerns and thoughts for a while. It was like having permission to really
think about things and sort it all out in my head rather than worry about
it at night, which is the worst thing to do. It was also good to have an
appointment that wasn’t medically focused and filled up the days when
I was too ill to work or do all the other normal things I would usually be
doing.
I would only fundraise for a charity I believe in and having benefitted
from the Helen Rollason Cancer Charity’s services during my cancer
treatment and recovery, I know first-hand the difference that treatment
made to my well-being.
I have been running since I was 20,
however a knee injury, having a
young family and a cancer diagnosis
meant I had to stop for a while and I
really missed it. Years after my
diagnosis I was back to my usual
fitness level and decided to mark my
5 year diagnosis with taking on the
famous London Marathon;
something I have always wanted to
achieve.
The event itself was indescribable and
when I saw my friends and family
cheering me on from the side-lines, it
SOUTH WOODHAM
FOCUS
was all hugs and tears! Even people I didn’t know where cheering me
on; ”keep going!” “you’re doing amazing” and “you’re smashing it!”
It really spurred me on to keep going. I’m so pleased I was able to
support the charity; it was only fitting I
give something back to them after all they
had done for me.”
Chris Howe, 43 from Gosfield near
Halstead finished his debut marathon in
06:27:56 and has raised £2,225.00 with
more money still coming in.
“Sadly in June 2017 my wife Tanya lost her
battle with cancer; she was such a truly
inspirational and brave woman and I know
she would have been so proud of me and
Rachel, Tanya’s sister, who I also ran with
on the day.
Tanya spent a year having her
chemotherapy, treatment and tests at
Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford and the Helen Rollason Cancer
Charity Support Centre at Rochelle House. They got us all through the
saddest and most worrying of times and I can’t thank the charity enough
on the truly astounding job they do.
I decided to run the 2018 London Marathon to give something back and
raise money to help other people who are affected by cancer to get the
much needed help and overwhelming support, just like Tanya did.
It was a tough and emotional day; the heat made it even harder but the
support from my friends, family and everyone lining the street cheering
us on, really pushed us to keep going. It’s an experience I will never
forget.”
South Woodham Focus
A tale of six halves: Wanderers’ busy
weekend of win, lose and draw
This was to be the most challenging weekend of the season for South
Woodham Ferrers United under 13 Wanderers: three games against two
key contenders for the league title. Two back to back games against
Benfleet Youth Blues looked a tall order as the Blues are through to two
cup finals but the first game opened brightly with shots from both sides.
With a damp pitch making passing difficult there was nothing between
the teams in the initial quarter: Jacob delivered a penetrating corner but
Wanderers’ lack of height relative to their loftier opponents snuffed out
the chance, while Luke was alert to snatch away the ball in the box from
a marauding forward. The second quarter looked more promising as
Will’s dynamic free kick on the edge of the box whipped in with a faint
touch from Freddie to put Wanderers ahead. Blues pushed hard
throughout the quarter but although they tested the keeper he was
equal to anything they tried and Wanderers were jubilant to complete
the first game with a deserved if unlikely-looking win.
Game two opened with even more promise as occasional forward Harry
converted Jacob’s slick pass to put Wanderers in front from the outset.
Blues dug deep and went for an all-out attack, quickly drawing level as
the powerful striker muscled his way through, but energy and good
footwork from Matthew prevented further dramas. However holding on
to the game for a fourth quarter proved too much for the boys in red as
Blues capitalised on carefully-worked passing to skid the ball into the
back of the net off the greasy surface. Harry and Freddie had chances to
steal the game but Blues continued to pile on the pressure. Conscientious
Will could have scored from a free kick which was headed off the line,
then finished by powering back to clear a dangerous ball from the box.
Four halves down: a win and a loss looked like an illustrious result, but
would the boys have enough energy against table-topping opponents
24 hours later?
Ominously, it appeared not as Leigh Ramblers Youth Blacks were one up
from the first attack of the game. The potent number 9 should have put
them further ahead, but regular stand in keeper Charlie R saved with his
feet, followed by a repeat performance from a free kick. For much of
the first half Wanderers had little time on the ball, with Ramblers
demonstrating why they are flying high with effective organisation and
pinpoint passing. However Wanderers’ defenders relished the workout:
Matthew, Daniel and Luke had plenty of chance to rehearse their
blocking moves and in midfield, Tom H, Tom F, Alfie, Will, Freddie and
Charlie W needed to draw on their reserves of energy to help out at the
back and attempt to move the ball forwards. Jacob’s thoughtful pass
gave Matthew a chance while Daniel delivered several promising balls
forwards. When Will’s free kick skimmed the bar, it was Wanderers’
opening shot for half an hour, but this chance seemed to invigorate the
boys in red: from Tom H’s resulting corner, diminutive Tom F popped up
amongst a crowd of giant defenders to head the ball home for
Wanderers’ equaliser. Revitalised, an amazing team passing sequence
culminated in Luke converting another zipping Tom H corner to put the
reds ahead at half time.
The final half of an industrious weekend saw Tom H’s free kick headed
over the bar before Freddie put on an exhibition of dribbling to gift
Jacob Wanderers’ third goal. It seemed almost too good to be true, as
indeed it was: Ramblers stormed straight off to score from the restart.
Could Wanderers hold on for an historic win? Would Daniel scupper their
chances with another own goal? Would the referee award a penalty
after Tom F appeared to have been taken down by the keeper when he
looked certain to score? After a long period of relentless Wanderers’
possession and further pressure, their weekend’s footballing exploits
proved five minutes too long as Ramblers finally broke through the
previously fortress-like defence to equalise. Will’s injury time free kick
forced a corner, but in the last-gasp scramble, there was no red foot
strategically placed to sneak the ball over the line. All in all, a much
better outcome than looked likely at the start of the weekend, with
Wanderers’ determination and splendid team spirit shining through to
test the teams at the top to their limit.
Roundup from SWF RUFC
This week’s match report from
the last game of the season.
SWF U14’s 36 v 7 Ongar U14’s
This week the U14’s hosted Ongar for their last league game of the
season and the last game of the season at Saltcoats Park. The weather
was a far cry from the summer like temperatures of last weekend. The
visitors arrived with 14 players, and Woodham loaned them a forward
for both halves to make up the numbers.
Woodham won the toss and elected to receive the kick off. Both teams
started well, but Woodham seemed to unnerve the visitors with some
quick intensive attack, locking them down whenever they had the ball.
Woodham were also quick off the mark from the breakdown stopping
the visitors shipping the ball out wide to try and come round the outside
of the Woodham defensive line.
Woodham scrum was also firing well again this week following some
warm up on the sledge ahead of the game. Woodham were putting
together some nice phases of play and after 9 minutes opened the
scoring through Gerrard who drove his way over the visitor’s line. The
conversion good Woodham had started well 7 – 0.
Ongar kicked off and were quickly up on the home side and applying
pressure. Woodham pushed the visitors back before having the ball
turned over. Ongar attacked again, but struggled with the line speed
from Woodham. They broke free for what looked like a decisive attack
but Ox read the play well to intercept a pass out to the wing to run
through and drag 2 Ongar tacklers over the line with him on 15 minutes.
Again the Try was good and Woodham were taking a commanding lead
14 – 0.
Play continued with the visitors being pinged for offside at the break
down. Ox attempted a Penalty Goal but came up short. Play continued,
however neither side were able to push through the opposition defence
to secure further points, until Harrison drove through the centre of the
Ongar defence to drive over for Woodham’s 3rd of the half. The
conversion this time not made, Woodham were 19 – 0 up with 2 minutes
to go. No further points were to come at half time.
Woodham kicked off the 2nd half and applied more pressure to the
Ongar defence. Bullet, back from injury after 7 weeks, received the ball
out on the wing and drop home to score after 28 minutes, shaking off
the covering tackle. The angle beating Ox this time on the conversion
the score now 24 -0.
Ongar started to push back at the Woodham defence, probing for a way
through. And after several phases of play from one side of the pitch to
the other they managed to break the Woodham defence and cross for
their first try of the game. With the conversion the score was now 24 –
7 after 32 minutes.
Woodham restarted and applied the pressure again. The pack still
working well and the line speed still interfering with the Ongar attack
more points came from Gerrard and again from Bullet, both securing
their brace in the game. Only 1 conversion made the final score was 36
– 7 to Woodham.
A great morning of rugby and great to finish the season with a win, all
the boys played their hearts out and gave everything. It’s great to see
how far the boys have come this season and stepped up their game after
going up a league. Presentation event is currently being planned, then
a break for 6 weeks at which point we will start up touch rugby again
before looking to formal preseason training ready for September.
